Let us walk you through the process
The first step is to determine which visa type you need, and check whether you’re eligible to apply for it.
You’ll also need to know the documents that you’ll have to submit along with your application, how long the application might take and fees you’ll have to pay.
Each application must comply with the guidelines applicable for your visa category.
If your documents are not in English, you may need to get translations prepared before applying.
Get started with your visa application
Once you are ready to apply, go to the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany website to apply for your visa online.
You can also download the visa application form, complete it, print the completed form, and bring it with you to the Visa Application Centre for submission.
Book an appointment
Choose a Visa Application Centre and make an appointment
Once you have applied for your visa, you need to book an appointment to have your fingerprints and photo taken at a Visa Application Centre. This is known as ‘biometric information’.
Once you’ve booked your appointment, you’ll receive an appointment confirmation email along with the letter of appointment.
If you are part of a family or group, you’ll have to book individual appointments for each member of the family or group.
• If you are a Maldivian and wish to obtain an appointment, you’ll have to continue with “Sri Lanka” under “Residing Country” selection.
• If you wish to apply for visa to Austria, Hungary and Latvia, you’ll have to continue with "Germany” under "Visiting Country" selection in order to continue with the appointment booking process.
• If you wish to submit your application to the German Visa Application Center in Jaffna, you’ll not require an appointment.
Every visa applicant, including children/infants, has to come and submit his/her visa application in the Visa Application Centre by appointment only. It is advised to book a visa application appointment as soon as applicants know they will be travelling, allowing enough time for the Mission to process the visa application (see Processing Time under the various visa categories) and taking in consideration the days that VFS Global offices and /or the Mission may be closed (see Public Holidays/Closures).Prior to the visa application appointment booking, applicants need to complete, print and sign the online Schengen visa application form (see Application Form as per respective visa category). The booking of a visa application appointment is as follows:
1. Click Appointment Link
2. Log in with registered credentials (new users need to register first)
3. Complete Appointment booking process
You can print the Appointment Booking Confirmation email with the Appointment letter (a PDF attachment), in the following steps:
1. Open the PDF attachment in email confirmation
2. Click file
3. Click print and confirm printing
