Airport Transit Visa

Overview
The airport transit visa entitles the foreigner to cross or to stay in the international transit zone of the airport in the case of a transit landing or of changing flights for the purpose of continuing travel to another state.
A foreigner staying in a transit room of international flights is deemed not admitted to the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria and is not entitled to leave the transit room.
Note: The Consular Administration has full authority to evaluate and request more documents than those submitted by the applicant. Submitting the following documents, while required, does not guarantee issuance of a visa. The visa does not in itself grant you the right to enter the territory of The Republic of Bulgaria.

As from 02 July 2009 holders of valid Diplomatic and Official Indian Passports can enter into, exit from and transit through the territory of Bulgaria without a visa for short-term visits of upto 90 (ninety) days within 6 (six) months.

The visa applicants have to present a valid travel medical insurance covering the entire period of planned stay with a minimum coverage of EUR 30,000. The insurance must be able to cover all expenses that may be incurred in connection with repatriation for medical reasons, emergency medical care and / or hospital treatment in case of emergency or death on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria. Overview
Bulgarian visa is a document granted to a foreigner for entry, stay in, or transit through the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria or for transit at an airport. The visa is issued in the form of a sticker affixed to a foreign travel document or to another substitute document issued in good and due form, and is valid solely in connection with this document and for the purpose for which the visa has been issued.
Visa is valid only with a valid passport. In case a new passport is issued to a person who has already obtained a Bulgarian visa and the passport with the Bulgarian visa has been cancelled, even if the visa has not expired, the person should apply for a fresh visa with the new passport if he/she wishes to proceed with the visit to Bulgaria.
Citizens of India who plan to visit Bulgaria are required to have a visa. As from 2 July 2009 holders of valid Diplomatic and Official Indian Passports can enter into, exit from and transit through the territory of Bulgaria without a visa for short-term visits of upto 90 (ninety) days within 6 (six) months.
As from 01 February 2012 holders of valid common two or Multiple entry Schengen visas are allowed to visit Bulgaria without a Bulgarian national visa, whereas the allowed number of entries and period of stay in Bulgaria should be equal to the permitted number of entries and period of stay on the common Schengen visa. Holders of valid long term visas or residence permits issued by Schengen countries are allowed multiple entries and a period of stay in Bulgaria for up to 90 days in any six-month period from the date of the first entry, without a Bulgarian national visa.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Please pay attention that according to the Bulgarian Government’s Decisions all visitors holders of valid Schengen documents, as well as national two or multiple entry visas and residence permits of Romania, Cyprus, and Croatia do not require an additional visa for Bulgaria.
Therefore, visitors who are holders of:
- uniform visa (C) for two or multiple entries, valid for all Schengen Area Member States;
- long-stay visa (D) for stays exceeding three months, issued by one of the Schengen Area Member States;
- residence permit issued by one of the Schengen Area Member States;
- national visas for two or multiple entries or residence permits of Romania, Cyprus and Croatia
do not require a visa for transit or intended stays in the territory of Bulgaria not exceeding 90 days in any 6 months.
The visitor will not be able to stay in Bulgaria for more days than specified in the visa. The number of days spent in Bulgaria is not deducted from the visa.
Information for the holders of the Residence card of a family member of a Union citizen:
A family member of a citizen of an EU Member State or the European Economic Area (EEA) may travel to Bulgaria without a visa, if (s) he has a valid passport and a valid Residence card of a family member of a Union citizen, and is travelling in the company of or is joining the family member who is a citizen of an EU Member State or the EEA. If the family member of a citizen of an EU Member State or the EEA does not have such a card, she/he needs a Bulgarian visa that will be issued on the basis of an accelerated procedure, free of charge.
A short-stay visa (C-visa) allows the visitor to transit through, or stay in the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria for a maximum of 90 days in any period 180 day-period. It is issued for one, two, or multiple entries for the purpose of transit, tourism, business, private or other purposes. Its validity period depends on the circumstances of the visitor’s travel to Bulgaria.
A multiple entry visa with a term of validity of up to one year may be issued to a foreigner, provided that she/he has received a short-stay visa in the previous year and has been used in accordance with the legal provisions for entry and residence in the Republic of Bulgaria
and
there are grounds for applying for multiple entry visa, as follows:
- The applicant maintains long-term business contacts with Bulgarian natural or legal persons operating under the Commerce Act;
- The applicant maintains long-term business contacts with Bulgarian legal entities operating under the Non-Profit Legal Entities Act;
- The applicant maintains long-term business contacts with representations of foreign legal entities, registered under art. 24 of the Investment Promotion Act;
- The applicant has a significant personal contribution to the development of bilateral relations with the Republic of Bulgaria;
- The Applicant is a member of a family of a Bulgarian citizen according to the Law on Foreigners in the Republic of Bulgaria;
- The Applicant is a family member of a citizen of a Member State of the European Union, of the European Economic Area or of the Swiss Confederation who resides in the Republic of Bulgaria for a long time;
- The Applicant is a member of the family of a foreigner who resides for a long time in the Republic of Bulgaria - while maintaining his / her habitual residence abroad;

The Applicant is a driver of international road transport or a member of the passenger and freight rail transport.
A foreigner cannot work in Bulgaria on the basis of a short-term visa.
The following persons are exempt from presenting proof for subsistence, accommodation and transportation:
- Members of the families or the households of European Union, European Economic Area and the Swiss Confederation citizens;
- Holders of service and diplomatic passports
The following persons are exempt from presenting an insurance policy:
- Members of the families or the households of European Union, European Economic Area and the Swiss Confederation citizens
- Holders of service and diplomatic passports

1. Application form: fully completed in English or Bulgarian language and signed in two places by the applicant in person (or by parent(s)/guardian(s) for minors under the age of 18) (field no 37 and last field). 2. Passport: must be valid at least three months after the intended date of departure from the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria or in case of multiple visits - after the last scheduled date of departure from the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria, containing at least two empty pages (back to back), issued within the previous 10 years. NO alteration or handwritten amendment concerning the data page 3. One photograph: recent, a full color photograph 3,5 cm х 4,5 cm against light-colored background – a full-face photo with clear, large enough face which takes up 70-80% of the photo; eyes must be red; the following is ineligible: photos with dark glasses; photos with hat or other head covering unless you wear this for religious reasons; non-professional photos or cut out of amateur photos 4. Proof of residence (if applicable): applicants staying temporarily in another state should submit a photocopy of the stay permit (e g. valid Indian Residency Permit or return visa to India) 5. Travel medical insurance shall be valid for Bulgaria and cover the entire period of the person’s intended stay. The minimum coverage shall be EUR 30 000. Applicants for multiple entries shall prove that they are in possession of adequate and valid travel medical insurance covering the period of their first intended visit. In addition a statement, declaring the awareness of the need to be in possession of travel medical insurance for subsequent stays, shall be signed (on prescribed form). 6. Cover letter: explaining the purpose of the trip and duration of stay 7. Valid visa for the destination country 8. Means of transportation: return travel ticket or confirmed booking (for air/surface/sea transport) 9. Proof of current social and professional status in native country - Service – Letter issued by the employer on company’s official letterhead establishing position of the employee in the company, years in service, grant of leave and alary certificate of the last three (3) months
- Business/self-employed – Visa request letter on official letter head with company registration papers
- Student – Letter from school / university for grant of leave and copy of the valid ID
10. Proof of sufficient funds: - Possession of the required financial resources for subsistence amounting to a minimum of EUR 50 per day of the stay requested with the visa application or their equivalent in another convertible currency but at least EUR 500 or their equivalent in another convertible currency, or a letter from the inviting organization/institution for covering of all expenses of the applicant stay in Bulgaria
- Three months bank statement (saving and current a/c, if applicable), and
- Three years Income Tax returns (personal and company, if applicable)
11. ITR: Income Tax Acknowledgement / ITR-V from the last three (3) years 12. Minor travelers: a parent/legal guardian shall submit the following-
- birth certificate, if the parents are the legal guardians, or
- the decision of the competent authority on appointing the legal guardian.
- If a minor is traveling without a parents/legal guardians:
a. a minor accompanied by one parent/ legal guardian shall provide original notarized consent of the other parent/legal guardian that shall contain personal information of the other parent/legal guardian and the purpose, the period and length of stay in Bulgaria, the period for which the consent is issued, and the signature of the other parent/legal guardian , plus copies of other parent’s guardian’s passport or ID
b. a minor travelling alone shall provide original notarized consent of the both parents/legal guardians that shall contain personal information of the parents/legal guardians and the purpose, the period and length of stay in Bulgaria, the period for which the consent is issued, and the signature of the both parents/legal guardians plus copies of parent’s/guardians’ passports or ID

Important Notes:
- The visa applicant on a first trip to Bulgaria / Schengen area must submit his/her application in person. For the next trips to Bulgaria the applications can be submitted by a representative.
- Any representative shall provide an original letter of authorization from the applicant bearing the name of the representative and its organization / company. A copy of a valid photo ID shall be attached to the application.
- The applicant bears responsibility concerning all content of the application.
- Applications cannot be submitted more than 3 months prior to departure.
- Processing can take up to 15 calendar days after receiving the application. Status queries will be responded after the above time frame only and shall be primarily addressed to the VFS-office of application or by e-mail to bgconsuldelhi@yahoo.com
- In case an application is lodged less than 15 calendar days before departure, a timely completion of the visa process cannot be guaranteed.
- However, in individual cases, that period may be extended up to 30 or to maximum of 60 calendar days particularly when further scrutiny of the application is needed.
- The applicant and/or its authorized representative declare being advised to submit full documentation according to the above checklist and that submission of incomplete or faulty documentation can be a reason for refusal of the application.
- Applicants are advised that during the examination of an application, Embassy may request additional documents. The Embassy may call applicants for an interview if deemed necessary.
- A short-stay visa for the purpose of transit is issued to a foreigner who wishes to transit through the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria en route to another state, for which he/she has a visa, if required.
- The transit visa entitles the foreigner to one, two, or as an exception – three, transit passages each for a term of 2 (two) days and may be with a validity term of up to 12 months.
- The overall duration of stay on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria with a transit visa may not exceed 90 days within every 6 months as of the date of the first entry.

No transit visa is required for passage of citizens of third states when they produce any of the following documents:
- Schengen (single) visa, long-stay visa, permit for stay issued by any of the Schengen area states;
- national short-stay visas, long-stay visas and permits for stay issued by Romania, Croatia and Cyprus;
- permits for stay issued by Lichtenstein.
The right of passage without a visa under the transit decisions is applied only and exclusively for the purposes of transit passage.

Citizens of Moldova, Georgia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Ukraine who have biometric foreign passports can enter and stay in Bulgaria without a visa for 90 days within 180 day period. Citizens of the above mentioned countries who do not have biometric passports should apply for a Bulgarian visa as per the standard procedure.
*Definition of “transit” passage
- The main condition to accept the passage as transit is the entry through the border of the Republic of Bulgaria with one state and exit through the border of the Republic of Bulgaria with another state.
- A special case is related to airport transit when it is assumed that the passage is transit when the arrival is with a flight from one state and the departure is with a flight to another state within two days.

- Should be passport sized 3,5 x 4,5 cm
- Close up to your head and top of your shoulders so that your face takes up 70-80% of the photograph
- Full face taken straight forward 30 - 36 mm from point of the chin to head of hair
- Taken against a light background
- Without sunglasses
- Without hat or other head covering unless you wear this for religious reasons
- Spectacles should not have toned or reflecting glasses
- The frame of the spectacles may not cover the eyes
- The mouth must be closed

As from 02 July 2009 holders of valid Diplomatic and Official Indian Passports can enter into, exit from and transit through the territory of Bulgaria without a visa for short-term visits of upto 90 (ninety) days within 6 (six) months.
As from 01 February 2012 holders of valid common two or Multiple entry Schengen visas are allowed to visit Bulgaria without a Bulgarian national visa, whereas the allowed number of entries and period of stay in Bulgaria should be equal to the permitted number of entries and period of stay on the common Schengen visa. Holders of valid long term visas or residence permits issued by Schengen countries are allowed multiple entries and a period of stay in Bulgaria for up to 90 days in any six-month period from the date of the first entry, without a Bulgarian national visa.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Please pay attention that according to the Bulgarian Government’s Decisions all visitors holders of valid Schengen documents, as well as national two or multiple entry visas and residence permits of Romania, Cyprus, and Croatia do not require an additional visa for Bulgaria.
Therefore, visitors who are holders of:
- uniform visa (C) for two or multiple entries, valid for all Schengen Area Member States;
- long-stay visa (D) for stays exceeding three months, issued by one of the Schengen Area Member States;
- residence permit issued by one of the Schengen Area Member States;

The visitor will not be able to stay in Bulgaria for more days than specified in the visa. The number of days spent in Bulgaria is not deducted from the visa.
Information for the holders of the Residence card of a family member of a Union citizen:
A family member of a citizen of an EU Member State or the European Economic Area (EEA) may travel to Bulgaria without a visa, if (s) he has a valid passport and a valid Residence card of a family member of a Union citizen, and is travelling in the company of or is joining the family member who is a citizen of an EU Member State or the EEA. If the family member of a citizen of an EU Member State or the EEA does not have such a card, she/he needs a Bulgarian visa that will be issued on the basis of an accelerated procedure, free of charge.
A short-stay visa (C-visa) allows the visitor to transit through, or stay in the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria for a maximum of 90 days in any period 180 day-period. It is issued for one, two, or multiple entries for the purpose of transit, tourism, business, private or other purposes. Its validity period depends on the circumstances of the visitor’s travel to Bulgaria.

A multiple entry visa with a term of validity of up to one year may be issued to a foreigner, provided that she/he has received a short-stay visa in the previous year and has been used in accordance with the legal provisions for entry and residence in the Republic of Bulgaria
and
there are grounds for applying for multiple entry visa, as follows:
- The applicant maintains long-term business contacts with Bulgarian natural or legal persons operating under the Commerce Act;
- The applicant maintains long-term business contacts with Bulgarian legal entities operating under the Non-Profit Legal Entities Act;
- The applicant maintains long-term business contacts with representations of foreign legal entities, registered under art. 24 of the Investment Promotion Act;
- The applicant has a significant personal contribution to the development of bilateral relations with the Republic of Bulgaria;
- The Applicant is a member of a family of a Bulgarian citizen according to the Law on Foreigners in the Republic of Bulgaria;
- The Applicant is a family member of a citizen of a Member State of the European Union, of the European Economic Area or of the Swiss Confederation who resides in the Republic of Bulgaria for a long time;
- The Applicant is a member of the family of a foreigner who resides for a long time in the Republic of Bulgaria - while maintaining his / her habitual residence abroad;
- The Applicant is a driver of international road transport or a member of the passenger and freight rail transport.
A foreigner cannot work in Bulgaria on the basis of a short-term visa.
The following persons are exempt from presenting proof for subsistence, accommodation and transportation:

There is a format for Invitation Letter which needs to be followed for anyone applying for Private Visit through VFS Global for Bulgaria
1. Application form: fully completed in English or Bulgarian language and signed in two places by the applicant in person (or by parent(s)/guardian(s) for minors under the age of 18) (field no 37 and last field). 2. Passport: must be valid at least three months after the intended date of departure from the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria or in case of multiple visits - after the last scheduled date of departure from the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria, containing at least two empty pages (back to back), issued within the previous 10 years. NO alteration or handwritten amendment concerning the data page 3. One photograph: recent, a full color photograph 3,5 cm х 4,5 cm against light-colored background – a full-face photo with clear, large enough face which takes up 70-80% of the photo; eyes must be red; the following is ineligible: photos with dark glasses; photos with hat or other head covering unless you wear this for religious reasons; non-professional photos or cut out of amateur photos 4. An Invitation - Declaration for a private stay of a foreigner to the Republic of Bulgaria

- The visa applicant on a first trip to Bulgaria / Schengen area must submit his/her application in person. For the next trips to Bulgaria the applications can be submitted by a representative.
- Any representative shall provide an original letter of authorization from the applicant bearing the name of the representative and its organization / company. A copy of a valid photo ID shall be attached to the application.
- The applicant bears responsibility concerning all content of the application.
- Applications cannot be submitted more than 3 months prior to departure.
- Processing can take up to 15 calendar days after receiving the application. Status queries will be responded after the above time frame only and shall be primarily addressed to the VFS-office of application or by e-mail to bgconsuldelhi@yahoo.com
- In case an application is lodged less than 15 calendar days before departure, a timely completion of the visa process cannot be guaranteed.
- However, in individual cases, that period may be extended up to 30 or to maximum of 60 calendar days particularly when further scrutiny of the application is needed.
- The applicant and/or its authorized representative declare being advised to submit full documentation according to the above checklist and that submission of incomplete or faulty documentation can be a reason for refusal of the application.

Overview
Bulgarian visa is a document granted to a foreigner for entry, stay in, or transit through the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria or for transit at an airport. The visa is issued in the form of a sticker affixed to a foreign travel document or to another substitute document issued in good and due form, and is valid solely in connection with this document and for the purpose for which the visa has been issued.
Visa is valid only with a valid passport. In case a new passport is issued to a person who has already obtained a Bulgarian visa and the passport with the Bulgarian visa has been cancelled, even if the visa has not expired, the person should apply for a fresh visa with the new passport if he/she wishes to proceed with the visit to Bulgaria.

Holders of valid long term visas or residence permits issued by Schengen countries are allowed multiple entries and a period of stay in Bulgaria for up to 90 days in any six-month period from the date of the first entry, without a Bulgarian national visa.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Please pay attention that according to the Bulgarian Government’s Decisions all visitors holders of valid Schengen documents, as well as national two or multiple entry visas and residence permits of Romania, Cyprus, and Croatia do not require an additional visa for Bulgaria.
Therefore, visitors who are holders of:

Information for the holders of the Residence card of a family member of a Union citizen:
A family member of a citizen of an EU Member State or the European Economic Area (EEA) may travel to Bulgaria without a visa, if (s) he has a valid passport and a valid Residence card of a family member of a Union citizen, and is travelling in the company of or is joining the family member who is a citizen of an EU Member State or the EEA. If the family member of a citizen of an EU Member State or the EEA does not have such a card, she/he needs a Bulgarian visa that will be issued on the basis of an accelerated procedure, free of charge.
A short-stay visa (C-visa) allows the visitor to transit through, or stay in the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria for a maximum of 90 days in any period 180 day-period. It is issued for one, two, or multiple entries for the purpose of transit, tourism, business, private or other purposes. Its validity period depends on the circumstances of the visitor’s travel to Bulgaria.
A multiple entry visa with a term of validity of up to one year may be issued to a foreigner, provided that she/he has received a short-stay visa in the previous year and has been used in accordance with the legal provisions for entry and residence in the Republic of Bulgaria
and
there are grounds for applying for multiple entry visa, as follows:
- The applicant maintains long-term business contacts with Bulgarian natural or legal persons operating under the Commerce Act;
- The applicant maintains long-term business contacts with Bulgarian legal entities operating under the Non-Profit Legal Entities Act;
- The applicant maintains long-term business contacts with representations of foreign legal entities, registered under art. 24 of the Investment Promotion Act;
- The applicant has a significant personal contribution to the development of bilateral relations with the Republic of Bulgaria;
- The Applicant is a member of a family of a Bulgarian citizen according to the Law on Foreigners in the Republic of Bulgaria;
- The Applicant is a family member of a citizen of a Member State of the European Union, of the European Economic Area or of the Swiss Confederation who resides in the Republic of Bulgaria for a long time;
- The Applicant is a member of the family of a foreigner who resides for a long time in the Republic of Bulgaria - while maintaining his / her habitual residence abroad;
- The Applicant is a driver of international road transport or a member of the passenger and freight rail transport.
A foreigner cannot work in Bulgaria on the basis of a short-term visa.
The following persons are exempt from presenting proof for subsistence, accommodation and transportation:

- Business/self-employed – Visa request letter on official letter head with company registration/ownership papers - Student – Letter from school / university for grant of leave and copy of the valid ID
10. Proof of sufficient funds:
- Possession of the required financial resources for subsistence amounting to a minimum of EUR 50 per day of the stay requested with the visa application or their equivalent in another convertible currency but at least EUR 500 or their equivalent in another convertible currency, or a document of prepaid tourist services
- Three months bank statement (saving and current a/c, if applicable), and
- Three years Income Tax returns (personal and company, if applicable)

- The visa applicant on a first trip to Bulgaria / Schengen area must submit his/her application in person. For the next trips to Bulgaria the applications can be submitted by a representative.
- Any representative shall provide an original letter of authorization from the applicant bearing the name of the representative and its organization / company. A copy of a valid photo ID shall be attached to the application.
- The applicant bears responsibility concerning all content of the application.
- Applications cannot be submitted more than 3 months prior to departure.
- Processing can take up to 15 calendar days after receiving the application. Status queries will be responded after the above time frame only and shall be primarily addressed to the VFS-office of application or by e-mail to bgconsuldelhi@yahoo.com
- In case an application is lodged less than 15 calendar days before departure, a timely completion of the visa process cannot be guaranteed.
- However, in individual cases, that period may be extended up to 30 or to maximum of 60 calendar days particularly when further scrutiny of the application is needed.

A photograph submitted with the application for a visa should comply with the following specifications:
- Must be an up-to-date photograph (preferably maximum 6 months old)
- Must be a color photograph printed on normal photographic paper
- Should be passport sized 3,5 x 4,5 cm
- Close up to your head and top of your shoulders so that your face takes up 70-80% of the photograph
- Full face taken straight forward 30 - 36 mm from point of the chin to head of hair

Bulgarian visa is a document granted to a foreigner for entry, stay in, or transit through the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria or for transit at an airport. Citizens of the above mentioned countries who do not have biometric passports should apply for a Bulgarian visa as per the standard procedure.

Photo Specifications
A photograph submitted with the application for a visa should comply with the following specifications:
- Must be an up-to-date photograph (preferably maximum 6 months old)
- Must be a color photograph printed on normal photographic paper
- Should be passport sized 3,5 x 4,5 cm
- Close up to your head and top of your shoulders so that your face takes up 70-80% of the photograph
- Full face taken straight forward 30 - 36 mm from point of the chin to head of hair
- Taken against a light background
- Without sunglasses
- Without hat or other head covering unless you wear this for religious reasons
- Spectacles should not have toned or reflecting glasses
- The frame of the spectacles may not cover the eyes
- The mouth must be closed
