Short Stay Visa
Short Stay visa is intended for touristic, business or visiting purposes (without gainful employment) for a maximum stay of 90 days per 180 days.
After scrutinizing the application, your application may have the following status
- Visa applied for is granted.
- Further documentation is requested.
- Applicant is requested to appear for a personal interview.
- The application is rejected.

Working hours are from Monday to Friday (except declared holidays and closures) from 8.30 to 12.00 and 13.00 to 16.00
Earlier possibility for filing the application 6 months (for seafarer 9 months) before the departure. Applications have to be filed in at least 15 days before the departure. Exemptions can be made only for justified reasons. Declaration sheet needs to be filled out and signed by the applicant.
However, they must be submitted at least 15 days prior to the proposed date of travel.VFS Global is the outsourcing office responsible for the reception and release of passports for short stay visa applications.
For a Schengen visa, nationals subject to an EU visa facilitation agreement must pay the amount set out in the agreement (usually € 35) if they are not already exempt from fees under the agreement. Fees are not required for the following:
- Children under the age of six
- Pupils, students, participants in postgraduate courses and accompanying teaching staff who wish to travel on study or training trips
- Researchers, as defined in point (2) of Article 3 of Directive (EU) 2016/801 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 May 2016, travelling for the purpose of carrying out scientific research or participating in a scientific seminar or conference
- Representatives of non-profit organizations up to the age of 25 participating in seminars, conferences, sports, cultural or educational events organized by non-profit organizations
- Third-country nationals of EEA countries or CH citizens entitled to free movement under the Directive on the free movement of persons.

Please note:
visa application must be submitted in person and each applicant is required to book an appointment to submit the Visa application
Frequent travelers to the Schengen Area do not have to give new finger scans every time they apply for a new visa. Once finger scans are stored in VIS, they can be re-used for further visa applications within 59 months.
The procedure may take up to 15 days (or more depending on the case).
Should the visa be refused, the applicant can appeal against the decision. The appeals are explained at the visa refusal notification
Non Thai citizen residing in Thailand must present proof of a long stay visa, work permit and re-entry visa. For Non-Thai Applicants the Thai Visa / Work permit should be valid for at least 3 months. Only legal residents in Thailand can request a Schengen visa at the Embassy of Austria in Bangkok.
Presenting all mentioned documents does not imply or guarantee that the visa will be granted, but that these documents are part of the requirements established by the Austrian legislation on Immigration matters. The final decision lies with the Austrian Consular authorities.
All documents should be translated in English or German
Holders of official or diplomatic Thai passports do not require a visa to enter Austria.

Student Visa

Overview
Student visas are given to bona fide students to pursue regular studies at recognized institutions in Austria. The visa is multiple entries and valid for the period of study as approved by the educational institution in Austria

- The visa fee for applicants applying to the Austria Visa Application Centre is payable by Cash, Credit Card and QR Code payment.
Visas are issued free of charge for:
- Children under age 6
- School pupils, students, post graduate students and accompanying teachers who undertake trips for the purpose of study or educational training
- Researchers from third countries travelling within the Community for the purpose of carrying out scientific research
- Spouses of EU/EEA citizens (EEA: Norway, Iceland, Lichtenstein) and their children, under the age 21 – under certain circumstances (please verify with the relevant consular authority). On the condition that the marriage is recognized by the country of the EU partner. Original of spouses’ EU/EEA passport, Full Marriage/Full Birth certificates, etc. must be submitted with application as proof of relationship with EU/EEA spouse/parent. Also provide air ticket which clearly shows that you will be traveling with the EU/EEA passport holder.
- Representatives of non-profit organizations aged 25 years or less participating in seminars, conferences, sports, cultural or educational events organized by non-profit organizations.
Due to a bilateral agreement the visa application fee for applicants of the following countries amount to € 35: Ukraine, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Georgia, Armenia and Moldova.
The visa fee is not refundable if a negative decision is taken on the application or if the application is withdrawn.

Visa “C” (“Studium”) applies for validity up to 90 days. Visa "D" (“Studium”) between 91 and 180 days. Visa in both categories cannot be extended or renewed in Austria. If applicant intends to stay longer than 6 (six) months, Residence Permit (“Aufenthaltstitel”) shall be applied for.
The Embassy reserves the right to ask for additional documents. The application form can only be processed after complete submission of all documents requested by the Embassy. The non-refundable visa fee has to be paid upon filing the application. All Thai documents have to be translated into German or English.
In case the visa application is lodged through a representative a Power of Attorney including applicant’s and representative’s signature must be provided. The representative’s signature on further requested documents is therefore legally effective.
Important: Wrong statements by the applicant or submission of falsified or forged documents result in the refusal of the visa application.

Photo Specifications

Note : The photographs submitted must meet with these specifications.
Please provide two recent photographs (not more than 6 months old) of yourself. The photographs should be in colour and:
- Taken against a light background (white or off-white) so that features are distinguishable and contrast against the background.
- Clear share quality and with the face in focus.
- Printed on normal photographic paper (camera print).
- Full face, non-smiling (without glasses, a hat/cap or other head covering, unless the applicant wears such items because of their religious belief or ethnic background).
- Please stick ( not stapled) one Photograph on the Visa Application Form and the second photograph to be handed over separately along with the documentation during submission at the visa application center.
Processing Time
Usually, processing time for visa applications is 15 working days (starting from the time when the Embassy or Consulate received the application, not including the transportation time), counting from when all requested documents have been submitted. This period may be extended in specific cases, notably when further scrutiny of the application is required, for example, when an applicant must come to an interview or submit additional documentation requested by the Embassy or Consulate. The passport needs to stay with the embassy for the whole processing time. During certain times of the year, the processing time can be longer due to the high volume of applications.
You can apply for your visa 6 months up to a minimum of 15 days before your intended travel date. Be mindful that there might be a waiting time for an appointment to file the applications. Applications which are filed less than 15 days before the intended travel date will not be accepted by the embassy.
Please note that the application processing time and decisions on visa applications are the sole prerogative of the Embassy or Consulate. VFS Global has no role to play in these areas of the application process.

Long Stay Visa
Effective date : 1 September 2025
If you intend to stay in Austria for more than 90 but less than 180 days as a student, on a business trip, applicants who pick-up their residence permit in Austria, or you intend to take up short term employment (less than 6 months) AND you are neither an EU nor an EFTA citizen, you need a national Austrian visitor visa (Visa D). The Visa D also entitles you to stay up to 90 days, within the validity of the Visa D, to enter other Schengen countries.
Long term visa (Visa D): 195 Euro to be paid in Thai Baht.
