Short Stay Visa
Citizens of a few non-EU countries are required to hold a valid Schengen visa when travelling to the Schengen area. An individual holding a Schengen visa is permitted to travel within the Schengen Area without being subjected to any form of border control for a period of 90 days or less.
The current Schengen member States are: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the germany, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
A Schengen visa has to be obtained from the Mission of the Schengen State, which is the main destination (i.e. where the most nights will be spent) during a single entry to the Schengen Area.
A single entry is considered when an individual enters and stays in the Schengen area without leaving its boundaries, only up to the maximum validity of the visa granted to him/her.
If equal number of nights will be spent in different Schengen States for a single entry to the Schengen Area, then the Schengen visa must be obtained from the Mission of the Schengen State, which will be first entered .
The documentation related to the travel and accommodation must cover the entire itinerary in the Schengen Area; i.e. flight reservation- if applicable should be provided, not only for the travel to and from the Schengen Area, but also for the travel between the different Schengen States, when more than 1 Schengen State will be visited.
Each Schengen visa application must fully comply with the documents required for the respective visa category and can only be submitted at the earliest 3 months (or less) before the intended departure date into the Schengen States.
The acceptance of a Schengen visa application and supporting documents by VFS does not guarantee the issuance of a Schengen visa.
The issuance of a Schengen visa, its validity period, the number of entries and amount of travel days are at the sole discretion of the Mission.
If a visa application is returned by the Mission due to a request for additional documents and/or incorrect information, the applicant must accept responsibility for any delay that may occur in the processing time.
Holders of valid Schengen visas are still subject to immigration control upon arrival in the Schengen Area and are not necessarily guaranteed entry into any of the Schengen countries, even though they may hold a valid Schengen visa for these countries.

Processing Time
Estimated processing time is 2 to 3 weeks, so applicants are advised to leave enough time - between the appointment date and travel date - for the Mission to process their visa application; no guarantees can be given on the visa application’s return date as delays may occur.
Please be advised that due to the above-mentioned minimum processing time, we are not able to guarantee the return of passports by specific dates for travel.
Please be sure to submit your visa application well in advance, to avoid any inconveniences
Every applicant can submit his/her Schengen visa application up to 6 months before the intended travel date to the Schengen Area.
In order to avoid any delays in the visa application process, it is paramount that the visa application is complete and its documents submitted are as per the Mission’s requirements (see Documents Required for the different visa categories).
Furthermore applicants need to consider that VFS/Mission’s closures and holidays (see Public Holidays/Closures) may extend the visa application processing time.
Therefore, VFS recommends all applicants:
- to book their appointment as soon as they know they’ll be travelling
- to ensure that their visa application’s documentation meets the Mission’s requirements
- to leave enough processing time for the Mission
The Mission may always request for additional information/documents or invite applicants for an interview during the visa application process and this may cause delays in the visa process, which applicants accept responsibility for.
