Short Term Visa

Overview
- If you are planning a short visit to Germany, you may need to apply for a Schengen visa. Germany is one of the 29 European countries forming the Schengen Area which have no border controls between them. These countries also issue a common visa, the Schengen visa for stays up to 90 days.
- Before scheduling an appointment, please make sure that you choose the Mission competent for your place of residence. Failure to do so will lead to your appointment being cancelled and your application not being accepted. Every mission reserves the right to ask for additional documents for proof of your habitual place of residence at the counter.
- All Schengen visa applications accepted for Germany across all Visa Application Centres in India will be forwarded to the German Consulate in Mumbai for a decision.

Applicants who wish to book appointments under the “urgent business” or “urgent trade fair” category must commence their journey within four weeks of booked appointment. If the travel date is scheduled for a later date, you cannot book an appointment under the urgent category and your application will not be accepted by VFS.

Visa Fees
The New Visa Fees is effective from 10th July 2025 for all cities.

- The applicable visa fee in Indian Rupees is as per the exchange rate of the German Consulate General, Mumbai.
- Visa fee, VFS service charge and value-added service fee are applicable per customer.
- Visa Fees, service charge and value-added service fees, once paid are non - refundable.
- The use of Optional Services will not affect the decision or turnaround time during the visa procedure.

- If your Germany visa application is submitted by a representative or a travel agent, we request you to please ensure that the attached declaration is filled and signed by you, and the representative or travel agent submitting the application form submits a copy of their passport bio page.

Overview
Information about Long Term Visa
On this website, you find all relevant information to obtain a national visa for Germany at the Consulate General in Kolkata.
Please note that VFS is only the external service provider authorized to accept appointment requests and National visa applications on behalf of the German missions in India. All procedures at VFS are in accordance with the guidelines of the German Consulate Kolkata. VFS has no influence on the visa process itself – therefore, VFS cannot accelerate procedures or influence decisions.
All procedures and fees are clearly marked and easily accessible for all customers. “The German Consulate strongly warns all applicants who use visa agents (to prepare an application or to book appointments) as misconduct on their side will lie in the responsibility of the applicant and may result in invalid appointment bookings or negative visa decisions”.
When is a National Visa required?
A National visa is required if your intended duration of stay in Germany is more than 90 days.
The visa applications will be submitted at the Visa Application Centre in accordance with the jurisdiction specified. All application decisions will be decided by The German Consulate General in Kolkata.
The German Consulate General in Kolkata issues visas for residents under its consular area, which includes the states of: West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. The place of issue of a passport does not determine the jurisdiction but it is the current place where an applicant resides that determines whether he/she belongs to the above jurisdiction.

Processing Time
After submittal, the visa section will check your application, inform you about missing documents and – if necessary – starts the internal procedure to obtain the necessary approvals of the authorities in Germany (Immigration Office (“Ausländerbehörde”) or Federal Employment Agency (“Bundesagentur für Arbeit”)). Different processing times may apply as the visa section does not have any influence on the individual processing times there.
You may find an overview of the general processing times of the different National visa categories on the website of the German consulate. Please note that during these processing times, the visa section will not be able to answer individual inquiries.
If your application was not complete at the time of submission, the visa section will contact you in order to submit further documents. Please note that the standard processing time only starts once your application is complete!

Upon receipt of the approval letter from the embassy, applicants may submit their passport along with the approval letter for the visa issuance at VFS Global Kolkata Centre. Please book an appointment from here: https://visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/deu/application-detail

NOTE: In any case of refund for Online/POS/NEFT Transactions, a bank charge will be deducted. The processing time for refund of Online Payment is 7 - 8 Working Days, POS Payment is 21 Working Days and NEFT Payment is 15 Working Days.
EU Regulation
- Application can be submitted only six (6) months prior to the date of departure.
- From May 1, 2010 only passports issued within the previous ten (10) years will be accepted.
- Passport must have at least two blank pages.
- Passport should be valid for at least three (3) months longer than the intended stay.
- Handwritten passports are not accepted.
