Overview
A Schengen visa is only intended to allow a foreign national to visit Italy and/or the other Schengen countries for a limited period of time. A Schengen visa is strictly a visitor's visa and does not give the holder the right to reside or work in Italy or any other Schengen country.
The issuance of a Schengen visa is discretionary and depends on examination of each individual application, including purpose of visit and intention to return to country of residence.

Visa Fee Effective from 01 July 2022
Fees are subject to change and may be varied by the authority at any time. If your application meets the initial completeness checks upon submission it will then be accepted for payment at the Visa Application Centre. You can pay the visa and service fee by credit or debit card. Cheques are not accepted. Documents Required
- Original Passport with a minimum validity of 3 months from the date of return from Schengen Region
- Previous Passports if any
- Completed Visa Application Form
- Australian Driver’s License or other proof of current address
- One recent passport size photograph as per specifications
- Appointment confirmation letter
- Employment Proof / Letter from Employment
- If invited by a private host in Italy, Annex 2, Host Declaration.pdf to be filled
- Travel Insurance with EUR 30000 minimum cover.
- Confirmed Itinerary along with proof of accommodation in Schengen Region

Photo Specifications

- The photograph must be in colour.
- It should be without border.
- It should have white background only so that features are distinguishable and in contrast against the background.
- It should have a close up of your head and top of your shoulders so that your face takes up 70-80% of the photograph.
- It should be in sharp focus and clear.
- It should be of high quality with no ink marks and creases.
- The photograph must show you looking directly at the camera.
- It should be 4 cm X 5 cm.
- It should show your skin tone naturally.
- It should have appropriate brightness and contrast.
- The photograph should be a recent one not more than 6 months old.
- Photograph can be taken with headgear, the main characteristics of the face must be apparent from the photograph. Chin, nose, eyes and eyebrows must not be covered; the forehead should be uncovered to the extent that the shape of the face is apparent.
- It should be without hat/cap.
- It should be without the applicant's hair tucked behind his/her ears.
- The photograph must show facing square on to the camera, not looking over the shoulder or tilted, and showing both edges of the face clearly.
- It should be taken with uniform lighting and not show shadows or flash reflections on the face and no red eye
- If wearing glasses the photograph must show the eyes clearly with no flash reflection off the glasses and no tinted lenses (if possible, avoid heavy frames – lighter framed glasses to be worn). Make sure the frame does not cover any part of the eye.
- The photograph must show alone (no chair backs, toys or other people visible) looking at the camera with a neutral expression and the mouth closed.
- The photograph should not have any staple marks.
- Scanned & colour photocopies would NOT be accepted.

Processing Time
The processing time for assessment of a Schengen visa at the Consulate General of Italy, Melbourne is 15 working days. Therefore applicants are strongly encouraged to file their application at least 15 working days prior to the date of departure and never, in any case, more than 90 days before departure. This will allow an orderly examination of the applications and limit the chances that decisions on visa applications are taken after the applicant's scheduled date of departure.
