Visa Information
Visa Types
You can apply for your visa at VFS Global Visa Application Center.
Please note: Not all travel documents are recognized by the Netherlands. If you apply for a visa with such an unrecognized travel document, your visa application may be declared inadmissible. More detailed information is available on the European Union website.
Select the type of visa that suits you to see important information about visa fees, required documents, forms, photo specifications and processing times.
Short-stay Schengen visa
A short-term visa offers the possibility to visit the Netherlands for a maximum of 90 days within a period of 180 days. This visa is valid in the Netherlands as well as in other Schengen countries.
The visa requirement depends on your nationality, destination and length of stay. A visa consultant will help you decide if you need a visa.
Do you have dual nationality? In this case, whether you need a visa will depend on the passport you are using when traveling.
Which type of visa do I need?
There is only one type of Schengen visa. However, you will need to submit different documents for the visa application due to your reason/category of travel. Make a choice:
- Tourism
- Visiting family/friends
- Business
- Seafarer/Blue Carpet
- Driver
- Airport Transit
- Sports, Cultural, Conferences
- EU Study, Training, Research
- Family Member of EU/EEA/Swiss National
- Spouse of Dutch Citizen
- Remigrant
- Entry Visa
- Orange Carpet
- Medical Treatment
Please be clear about the purpose of your trip before applying for a visa. VFS Global can assist you throughout the entire visa application process, but cannot advise or guide you in the selection of a visa category. As VFS Global's work is essentially administrative in nature, VFS Global has no say in whether you will be granted a visa and how long your application will take.
Visiting more than one Schengen country
If you intend to visit more than one country in the Schengen area, you must submit your visa application to the Schengen country that is relevant to the main purpose of your trip. If the main purpose of your trip is the same for more than one country (e.g. holiday), apply for your visa in the country where you plan to stay the longest. If you plan to spend the same amount of time in each Schengen country you are travelling to, apply for your visa in the country you want to visit first.
How will my application be assessed?
Some Schengen Member States are willing to share information about visa applicants. This check (known as a 'consultation') is mandatory for citizens of some countries and can take up to 7 days.
Your application will also be checked in the Schengen Information System (SIS II). Your application details will also be checked and recorded in the Visa Information System (VIS).
The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs uses information-supported decision-making to make more accurate and faster decisions on visa applications. For more information about the processing of your data, see the privacy statement.
Tourism
-
Overview
This visa is solely for the purpose of leisure travel including vacationing, cruising, sightseeing and other recreational activities. If during any portion of your visit to Netherlands you intend to engage in business or other non-tourism activities you must apply under another visa category.

The validity of your visa indicates the dates between which you should enter AND leave the Schengen.

When a visa is valid for more than six months, the duration of stays is 90 days in a 180-day period. If you get a multiple-entry visa you may leave and return any number of times within the 180-day period, but the combined stay within the region must not total more than 90 days.

Seafarer/Blue Carpet
-
Overview
Only seamen who are (1) nationals from a country with a visa requirement to enter the Schengen space, and (2) who intend to join a ship in a Dutch port, need to apply for a seafarer visa.
The authority of the Netherlands to take in a visa application is determined by the (main) purpose, or the country of the port where the ship is docked (Article 5 Visa Code). As shown in below examples it is not determined by the flag under which a ship sails or where the applicant enters the Schengen area.
Entry into Schengen area through the Netherlands (for example Amsterdam Airport Schiphol):
- Dutch flagged ship + embarking in Dutch port => Apply for visa to the Netherlands
- Spanish flagged ship + embarking in Dutch port => Apply for visa to the Netherlands
- Panamanian flagged ship + embarking in Dutch port => Apply for a visa to the Netherlands
- Dutch flagged ship + embarking in Spanish port => Apply for a visa to Spain
- Spanish flagged ship + embarking in Spanish port => Apply for a visa to Spain
- Panamanian flagged ship + embarking in Spanish port => Apply for a visa to Spain
Entry into Schengen area not through the Netherlands but through another Schengen country (for example Airport in Paris):
- Dutch flagged ship + embarking in Dutch port => Apply visa to the Netherlands
- Spanish flagged ship + embarking in Dutch port => Apply visa to the Netherlands
- Panamanian flagged ship + embarking in Dutch port => Apply visa to the Netherlands
- Dutch flagged ship + embarking in Spanish port => Apply visa to Spain
- Spanish flagged ship + embarking in Spanish port => Apply visa to Spain
- Panamanian flagged ship + embarking in Spanish port => Apply visa to Spain
The issuing authority reserves the right in case of doubt concerning a visa application to check with the relevant maritime and / or port authority if the ship where applicant will embark is indeed expected and if the applicant is listed for embarkment on the ship. At crossing the border the Dutch border authorities will check the conditions for admission in an independent and strict manner. At that moment the border authorities are authorized to cancel the visas of seafarers who are not eligible (anymore) for admission.
Blue Carpet
In Turkey a Blue Carpet procedure, exists for seafarers who meet BOTH of the following criteria:
- They are travelling to the Netherlands to board a ship in the Netherlands
- The ship that they are boarding is sailing under a Dutch flag or the ship is owned by a Dutch shipping agency (sailing under a non-Dutch flag).
The Blue Carpet procedure simplifies and accelerates the issue of visas to seafarers prior to their departure. It is also possible to apply for multiple-entry short-stay visa and for a longer period of validity.
The advantages of the procedure are :
- Cost-saving: Paying once for a (multi-entry) visa for a longer period of validity, instead of paying each time for a single-entry visa
- Reduction in the administrative burden: less visa applications.

Upon receiving your visa at the Visa Application Centre, please check it carefully and inform the staff at the counter if you find an error. Correction of any error discovered after leaving the Visa Application Centre will require new visa registration and payment of new handling fee.
