Schengen Visa - Type A For Norway
-
Overview
All travellers, who must be in possession of a visa when crossing the external Schengen border, need a Schengen visa type C if they pass the border control in Norway.
If you are arriving at Oslo airport (Gardermoen) from a non-Schengen country and departing to a non-Schengen country, you may stay within the premises of the transit area at the airport. Most travellers will in this case not need a visa, as they will not cross the external Schengen border. However, some nationals are required to be in possession of an Airport Transit Visa - Schengen Visa Type A. For a list of nationalities who require an Airport Transit Visa for Norway, please click here.
If applying for an Airport Transit Visa, the application will need to be submitted on the UDI portal as a Schengen Visa Type C. You will also need to attach an explanation letter with your application specifying that the application is for an Airport Transit Visa – Type A to Norway. The Embassy will then amend the application from their end once received.
Please note that the transit area at the Oslo airport is closed between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. every day. If your arrival and the time of departure of your connecting flight makes it necessary to stay at the airport between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., you cannot use the transit area, but must pass the border control in order to stay at the airport’s non-transit area or a nearby hotel. In addition, persons who need to collect and re-check in their luggage at the airport (normally when using different airlines) also have to go through the border control, even if they are only transiting. Travellers, who must be in possession of a visa when crossing the external Schengen border, must in these situations apply for a Schengen visa type C. The same applies to travellers who transit at any other airport in Norway.
When applying for a Schengen visa for the purpose of transit (Type A or Type C), the applicant must provide the flight ticket and, if required, the visa to the final destination. If the applicant needs to exit the transit area of the airport, a document explaining why they need to pass the border control must also be provided, together with valid travel medical insurance and documentation of hotel reservation and funds to cover the stay in Norway, as applicable. Please note that applicants applying for Airport Transit Visa Type A are not required to present proof of travel medical insurance, as holders of such visa are not allowed to enter into the territory of Member States. The Embassy may request any other documentation deemed necessary to process the application.

Schengen Visa- Type C
-
Overview
The visa can be valid for maximum 90 days in the course of a period of 180 days. The period is calculated from the date you first crossed the external Schengen border. The visa’s validity period, first possible day of entry and the day you must leave the Schengen area are written on the visa sticker.
A visa is generally granted for a single entry. If you plan to travel outside the Schengen area and return within the period covered by the visa, you must tick the ‘two or multiple entries’ box when you apply for a visa. You must also explain why you require multiple entries.
If you have compelling reasons, you can be issued a visa that is valid for multiple entries during a period for up to five years. Such visas are only available for certain categories of applicants, e.g. business persons etc. For more information, please see "Multiple Entry Visa".
A visa does not entitle you to work or carry out any business activities during your visit. If you wish to work or stay for an extended period in Norway, you must apply for a permit.
For more details, please see the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration’s website. Please note that the information provided there also applies for short stay visits to Sweden or Iceland.
