SHORT STAY VISA
This site provides information on procedures applicable to all Sri Lankan residents who wish to apply for a Schengen visa to travel to Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland.The Norwegian Embassy in New Delhi is responsible for processing applications from Sri Lanka.
For Prospective Applicants
If you wish to apply for a Schengen visa to Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, kindly read the information on this site carefully. If you follow the guidelines listed on this site, you will be able to submit your documents accurately. This will reduce the chances of your application being rejected due to inadequate or faulty submission of documents.
A Schengen visa allows you to visit Norway and/or the other countries in the Schengen area for up to 90 days over a period of 180 days. If you wish to reside in Norway for an extended period of time (more than 90 days), you need to apply for a long stay visa/ residence permit. Please be informed that a Schengen visa does not allow you to take up employment or to establish a business, trade or profession in the Schengen area.
As long as your visa is valid, you can travel around freely in the Schengen area, or in the specific Schengen countries covered by the visa. If you leave the Schengen area, for example to visit the UK or Svalbard, you will need a multiple entry visa.

Checklists - What documents to bring for your visa
The processing time for Schengen visas to Norway is normally up to 15 days from the date the application is received at the Embassy in New Delhi. If the Embassy has to request additional documents or information, it will take more time to process the application. In some cases, applications are sent to the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) in Norway, and the processing time for these cases may be up to 30 days. In exceptional cases UDI may take up to 60 days to make a decision. (Note that the extended processing time will change from 30/ 60 days to 45 days in accordance with the revision of the Visa Code in February 2020).
Please take note that you should account for an additional 6-8 days for sending the application documents between the VFS application centre in Colombo and New Delhi. We highly recommend that you apply well in advance, at least 4 weeks prior to your planned trip. You may register and submit your application 3 months before your planned trip. (Please note that the possibility to submit an application 3 months before the planned trip will be changed to 6 months after the 2nd February 2020, due to the revision of the Visa Code).
If you have been granted a visa, a sticker will be placed in your passport. You are responsible for ensuring that the information in the issued sticker is correct. When you collect your passport it is important that you check that the spelling of your name, passport number, duration of stay and number of entries to the Schengen area is correct on the visa sticker. If the sticker contains inaccurate details, inform the Royal Norwegian Embassy immediately in order to have it corrected.
A visa issued by a Schengen country permits free movement within the Schengen area, unless otherwise stated on the visa sticker. However, please note that according to article 47 of the Visa Code mere possession of a visa does not confer an automatic right to entry and that the holders of visa are requested to present proof that they fulfil the entry conditions at the external border, as provided for in Article 5 of the Schengen Borders Code.
When you cross the border into the Schengen area, you will have to present
- your passport with the visa sticker
- proof that you have enough money to support yourself during your stay (e.g. cash or a credit card). If you have a guarantee form, you should also bring a copy of this with you.
- documentation showing the purpose of your visit, such as an invitation, hotel reservation, etc.
- a return or round trip ticket if you are visiting the Schengen area for tourist purposes or private reasons
You may be asked to provide fingerprints by the border control officer, in which case these will be compared with the fingerprints provided when you applied for your visa.
Please be advised that if you do not travel directly from Sri Lanka to the Schengen area, you might need a transit visa to the country you are transiting in.
Tourist

Overview
If you wish to travel to Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland as a tourist, you can apply for a Schengen visa at the Visa Application Center in Colombo. Your application will be forwarded to the Royal Norwegian Embassy in New Delhi for further processing. All cases are considered individually to see if the conditions for granting a visa a fulfilled. Applicants travelling as a group are encouraged to register their applications as a group in the Application Portal.
If you plan to visit several Schengen countries in the course of one trip, you must submit your application to the embassy or consulate of the country that is your main destination, i.e. where you intend to spend the most days. If you intend to visit several Schengen countries, but do not have a main destination (i.e. you intend to spend an equal amount of days in each country), you should apply at the embassy or consulate of the Schengen country which is your first port of entry.

Aside from the application fee, VFS will collect a service fee of 20 Euros(LKR 6,300.00) for each visa application. VFS accepts payment in cash at the Norway counter at the VFS Norway Visa Application center at the time of submission.
VFS will collect a fee of 18 Euros(LKR 5,670.00) for Passport Resubmission cases.
Applicants exempted from paying the visa fee:
- Children under 6 years
- School pupils, students, post-graduate students and accompanying teachers who undertake trips for the purpose of study or educational training
- Researchers from third countries travelling for the purpose of carrying out scientific research, as per specific rules
- Applicants related to (spouse, descendant or dependent ascendant of) EEA citizen who are exercising their right to free movement (on production of relevant certificates (birth certificate, marriage certificate, etc.)
- Representatives of non-profit oranisations aged 25 years or less participating in seminars, conferences, sports, cultural or educational events organized by non-profit organisations.
In certain cases, the fee may be waived or reduced in accordance with national legislation, when this would serve to promote cultural, foreign policy or development policy interests, other areas of vital public interest, or for humanitarian reasons.
Courier re-submission:
The applicant may request to have the passport returned from the embassy while the application is being processed. If the applicant later resubmits the passport for issuance of visa, VFS may request the applicant to pay EUR 18 to cover the Resubmission Courier.
VFS charges (service charges & Additional Services) are to be paid in cash only. All service fees are non-refundable

All documents must be presented in original, but will be returned to you if a copy is provided. For documents that must be translated into English, the translation must state who translated the document, and the date the document was translated. All documents should be submitted in A4 format, and no documents should be stapled together.
The Embassy reserves the right to request additional information/documentation and, if deemed necessary, to interview the applicant. Kindly be informed that presentation of the documents in the relevant checklist does not guarantee issuance of a visa.

Note: Kindly note that you must have sufficient funds to cover your journey to, and stay in Norway / Denmark / celand / Sweden (as the case may be). If you are without funds you can be stopped at the border, even if you have obtained a visa. In certain cases, a financial guarantee for your stay and for your return will suffice from the person or persons you intend to visit.

Photo Specifications
The photograph shall:
- Be in sharp focus, clear and with good contrasts
- Be printed on quality photo paper with high solution
- Be in colours with a light background
- Be 35 – 40 mm in width
- Maximum 6 months old, resemble the applicant
- Full-face, facing the camera directly, eyes looking straight at the camera
- Show the whole head and the top of the shoulders. The face shall occupy 70-80% of the picture
- Show open eyes that are clearly visible. Hair shall not cover the eyes
- Teeth should not be visible
Regarding glasses:
Glasses are allowed as long as the eyes are clearly visible.
- The glasses cannot be coloured
- The rim must not cover any part of the eyes
- There cannot be reflection in the glasses
Regarding head-dress:
Religious head-dresses are allowed provided that all details of the face are clearly shown.
- Chin, forehead and both cheeks shall be clearly visible
- Shadows in the face due to the head-dress are not allowed

If you are a close family member (spouse/partner/cohabitant/financially dependent child or parent) to someone who is a citizen of another EU/EEA country than Norway and is staying in Norway, or a Norwegian citizen who is living in another EU/EEA country on a permanent basis and you are either going to travel together with, or visit, this person, you can apply for a Schengen visa at the Visa Application Center in Colombo. Your application will be forwarded to the Royal Norwegian Embassy in New Delhi for further processing. All cases are considered individually to see if the conditions for granting a visa a fulfilled. If you plan to visit several Schengen countries in the course of one trip, you must submit your application to the embassy or consulate of the country that is your main destination, i.e. where you intend to spend the most days. If you intend to visit several Schengen countries, but do not have a main destination (i.e. you intend to spend an equal amount of days in each country), you should apply at the embassy or consulate of the Schengen country which is your first port of entry.
A Schengen visa allows you to visit Norway and/or the other countries in the Schengen areafor up to 90 days over a period of 180 days. If you wish to reside in Norway for an extended period of time (more than 90 days), you need to apply for a long stay visa/ residence permit. Please be informed that a Schengen visa does not allow you to take up employment or to establish a business, trade or profession in the Schengen area.
As long as your visa is valid, you can travel around freely in the Schengen area, or in the specific Schengen countries covered by the visa. If you leave the Schengen area, for example to visit the UK or Svalbard, you will need a multiple entry visa.
Checklists- What documents to bring for your visa
If you have been granted a visa, a sticker will be placed in your passport. You are responsible for ensuring that the information in the issued sticker is correct. When you collect your passport it is important that you check that the spelling of your name, passport number, duration of stay and number of entries to the Schengen area is correct on the visa sticker. If the sticker contains inaccurate details, inform the Royal Norwegian Embassy immediately in order to have it corrected.
A visa issued by a Schengen country permits free movement within the Schengen area, unless otherwise stated on the visa sticker. However, please note that according to article 47 (i) of the Visa Code mere possession of a visa does not confer an automatic right to entry and that the holders of visa are requested to present proof that they fulfil the entry conditions at the external border, as provided for in Article 5 of the Schengen Borders Code.
When you cross the border into the Schengen area, you will have to present:
- your passport with the visa sticker
- proof that you have enough money to support yourself during your stay (e.g. cash or a credit card). If you have a guarantee form, you should also bring a copy of this with you.
- documentation showing the purpose of your visit, such as an invitation, hotel reservation, etc.
- a return or round trip ticket if you are visiting the Schengen area for tourist purposes or private reasons
You may be asked to provide fingerprints by the border control officer, in which case these will be compared with the fingerprints provided when you applied for your visa.
Please be advised that if you do not travel directly from Sri Lanka to the Schengen area, you might need a transit visa to the country you are transiting in.

Processing Time
The processing time for Schengen visas to Norway is normally up to 15 days from the date the application is received at the Embassy in New Delhi. If the Embassy has to request additional documents or information, it will take more time to process the application. In some cases, applications are sent to the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) in Norway, and the processing time for these cases may be up to 30 days. In exceptional cases UDI may take up to 60 days to make a decision. (Note that the extended processing time will change from 30/ 60 days to 45 days in accordance with the revision of the Visa Code in February 2020).
Apply well in advance of your travel
Please take note that you should account for an additional 6-8 days for sending the application documents between the VFS application centre in Colombo and the Embassy in New Delhi. We highly recommend that you apply well in advance, at least 4 weeks prior to your planned trip. You may register and submit your application 3 months before your planned trip. LONG STAY VISA
Sri Lankan nationals who wish to stay in Norway for more than 90 days have to apply for a residence permit in order to work, study or live with a family member in Norway./p>
For nationals of other countries:
- Nationals of EU/EEA countries do not need a residence permit to stay or work in Norway. However, all nationals of EU/EEA countries who want to stay for longer than three months must register with the police.
