Visitors Visa Less Than Three (3) Months

Overview
South African short-term visas are available for those who wish to visit South Africa as tourists or to visit family and friends. In all cases short-term South African visas are issued as temporary residence permits and do not lead to the opportunity to apply permanent residency.

Documents Required
- • Complete, accurately filled and signed application form (DHA-18) Form 11 by the applicant in black ink.
- Two passport sized photos recently taken with white background as per 35mm x 45mm size.
(Refer to photo specifications for detailed description of the requirements.) - Valid passport which expires in no less than 90 Days after expiry of the intended date of departure from the Republic of South Africa with two blank pages and a copy of passport certified by the government or representative of the country you are a citizen off in terms of regulation 9(1)(a)
- Introduction letter from the applicant specifying the purpose of the visit duly signed.
- Introduction letter from current employer dully signed with a date and company stamp and clear company logo. The employer must not only confirm employment but also indicate whether the traveler will be on leave for the duration of that period
- Passport should have at least three (3) sheets available.
- Original Certified copy of passport. (Certified by issuing office, if you are a foreigner residing in Botswana certify at your embassy).
- Clear original certified copies of valid work permit (certified by Botswana labor) and residence permit (certified by Botswana Immigration).Validity not to be less than 3 months) Foreigners visiting Botswana must note that they do not qualify to apply for a Visitor visa to South Africa. Should your Botswana permits be expiring in 90 days from date of intended submission, your application will not be taken.
- The prescribed Visa fee + Service Fee are non – refundable. (Cash is not accepted. Swipe credit/debit card or direct cash deposit into the bank i.e. only after getting application checked and verified at the center)
- Proof of sufficient financial means contemplated in sub-regulation (3). Three months recent bank statement with a BANK STAMP on it with not less than P3000.00 per applicant. If you submit business bank statements, remember to bring the bank signatory letter.
- The application is being submitted in person or by a duly authorized individual with an authorization letter signed by the applicant along with a Government issued Identity document. (Applications of persons who are not in the country will not be accepted)
- In addition to the above requirements, in the case of an applicant under the age of 18 years-
- A copy of an unabridged birth certificate certified by the issuing office;
- Original certified copies of parents passport & valid visa copy (Including Botswana Permits Certified By The Issuing Authorities)
- Proof of physical address and contact number of the adult person residing in the Republic, who is acting or has accepted to act as such guardian, including a confirmatory letter from that guardian; and
- Proof of consent for the intended stay from both parents, or where applicable, from the parent or legal guardian who has been issued with a court order granting full or specific parental responsibilities and rights or legal guardianship of the minor.
- Where applicable, a copy of a court order granting the applicant parental responsibilities and rights in respect of the child
- Statement or documentation detailing the purpose and duration of the visit in terms of regulation 11(1)(a)
- Where the application is for the attendance of an activity or event, include a letter from the organisation under whose control the activity or event will take place, confirming such attendance and whether or not the foreigner will be remunerated, and if remunerated, the amount of the remuneration.
- Copy of yellow fever vaccination certificate if that person travelled or intends travelling from or transiting through a yellow fever endemic area: (Provided that the certificate shall not be required where that person travelled or intends travelling in direct transit through such area)
- The affidavit where a spousal relationship to a South African citizen or resident is applicable as well as documentation proving the extent to which the related financial responsibilities are shared by the parties and setting out the particulars of children in the spousal relationship.
- Proof of a union recognised in terms of the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act, 1998 (Act No. 120 of 1998), where applicable.
- Divorce decree, where applicable.
- Death certificate, in respect of late spouse, where applicable.
- Legal separation order, where applicable.
- Confirmed reservation with proof of transactional payment of the accommodation which you are going to stay at.
- Date on hotel reservation should be after the Turn around visa processing time i.e. if application is submitted on the 23rd July reservation should be any day after 28th July
- If payment is made by electronic transfer submit (documents stamped at the bank):
- EFT slip
- TT deposit slip
- If payment is made using a Visa Card submit:
- Stamped bank statement reflecting the transaction (ensure the name of the hotel reflects on these documents)
- If staying with a host who is a citizen, PR holder or temporary resident visa holder in RSA, provide:
- Invitation letter (should state duration of stay)
- Hosts recent municipality water and light bill (Certified From RSA Police)
- Hosts certified copy of ID/permit or proof of PR (Certified From RSA Police)
- Hosts recent 3 months bank statement stamped from the bank with minimum of 3000.00 per person
- Host should show proof of relation with the applicant
- If your host is a business owner or partner in RSA, there may be additional documents e.g. 60% proof of employment of RSA citizens or PR holders as well as the organizational structure of that business in RSA
- If you own a property in RSA, provide certified copy of your title deed with recent municipality water and/or light bill (Certified by RSA Police).
- If you are renting a property, provide a lease agreement with recent municipality water and/or light bill. (Certified by RSA Police)
Notes: No person holding a visitor's visa may apply for a change of status to his or her visa while in the Republic, unless under exceptional circumstances set out below:
- Is in need of emergency lifesaving medical treatment for longer than three months;
- Is an accompanying spouse or child of a holder of the business or work visa, who wishes to apply for a study or work visa;
- Be that the holder's continued stay in the republic is required for any purpose related to a criminal trial in the republic: provided that such application shall be initiated by the relevant deputy director of public prosecutions and addressed to the director-general.
Additional Notes;
- All copies to be certified by the issuing office and should not be older than 6 months from the date of certification.
- Anyone visiting Botswana and is NOT A RESIDENT of Botswana does not qualify to apply for a visa/permit to RSA.
- No application is accepted without an accompanying passport.

- Original Police clearance certificate issued by the police or security authority in each country where the relevant applicant resided for 12 months or longer after attaining the age of 18 years, in respect of criminal records or the character of that applicant, which certificate shall not be older than (6) six months at the time of its submission: (Provided that the certificate shall not be required from a foreign country in the case of renewal or extension of a visa). The Police clearance certificate shall also be required where one is born in Botswana but is a citizen of another country e.g. Born in Botswana to Zimbabwean parents, a Zimbabwean police clearance will be required.
- Proof of sufficient financial means to be proven by means of a current 3 months bank statement stamped and signed by the bank with a minimum closing balance of P3, 000.00 per person at the time of application. (If submitting a business bank statement, remember to bring bank written, stamped and signed signatory letter).
- A medical report not older than 6 months
- A radiological report. Provided that a radiological report shall not be required in respect of children under the age of 12 years or pregnant women;
- in respect of dependent children accompanying the applicant or joining the applicant in the Republic, proof of parental responsibilities and rights or written consent in the form of an affidavit from the other parent or legal guardian, as the case may be
- in respect of a spouse accompanying the applicant or joining the applicant in the Republic, a copy of a marriage certificate or proof of a relationship as contemplated in regulation 3;
- Statement or documentation detailing the purpose and duration of the visit in terms of regulation 11(1)(a)
- In respect of dependent children accompanying the applicant to or joining the applicant in the Republic, be accompanied by:
- proof of consent from one or both parents or legal guardian, as the case may be, in the form of a letter or affidavit;
- where applicable, a copy of a court order granting the applicant parental responsibilities and rights in respect of the child; a letter from the person who is to receive the child in the Republic, containing his or her residential address in the Republic where the child will be residing;
- a copy of the identity document or valid passport and visa or permanent residence permit of the person who is to receive the child in the Republic; and
- the contact details of the parents or legal guardian;
- Where the application is for the attendance of an activity or event, include a letter from the organisation under whose control the activity or event will take place, confirming such attendance and whether or not the foreigner will be remunerated, and if remunerated, the amount of the remuneration.
- A yellow fever vaccination certificate if that person travelled or intends travelling from or transiting through a yellow fever endemic area.

Transit Visa

Overview
- A transit visa shall-
- In the case of air transit, be issued for a period not exceeding 24 hours; and
- In the case of land transit, be issued for a period not exceeding 48 hours.
- Transit by air:
Applicants who are transiting by air from the following airports are exempt from obtaining a transit visa:
- OR Tambo International
- Cape Town International
- King Shaka
- Lanseria
Those transiting by sea or road to neighbouring countries will still require a transit visa and must lodge their applications at any of the South African Visa Application Centres.

- Introduction letter from the applicant specifying the purpose of visit duly signed in terms of regulation 11(1)(a)
- Clear original certified copies of valid work permit (certified by Botswana labor) and residence permit (Certified by Botswana Immigration with a validity not to be less than 6 months). Individuals holding a visitor’s visa to Botswana must note that they do not qualify to apply for a Visitors Visas to South Africa while visiting Botswana. Should your Botswana permits be expiring in 90 days from date of submission, your application will not be accepted.
- Introduction letter with clear company logo from current employer dully signed with a date and company stamp. The employer must not only confirm employment but also indicate whether the traveler will be on leave for the duration of that period.
- Copy of yellow fever vaccination certificate with visible expiry date, if you travelled or intend to travel from or transit through a yellow fever endemic area: (Provided that the certificate shall not be required where that person travelled or intends travelling in direct transit through such area)
- Copy of confirmed flight reservation from RSA with departure and return dates.
- Proof of sufficient financial means, to be proven by means of a current 3 months bank statement stamped and signed at the bank with a minimum closing balance of BWP 3,000.00 per person at the time of application. (If submitting a business bank statement, remember to bring bank written, stamped and signed signatory letter).
- In addition to the above requirements, in the case of an applicant under the age of 18 years-
- An unabridged birth certificate certified from the issuing office;
- Original certified copies of parents passport & valid visa copy (including Botswana permits certified by the issuing authorities)
- Proof of physical address and contact number of the adult person residing in the Republic, who is acting or has accepted to act as such guardian, including a confirmatory letter from that guardian; and
- Proof of consent for the intended stay from both parents, or where applicable, from the parent or legal guardian who has been issued with a court order granting full or specific parental responsibilities and rights or legal guardianship of the minor.
- If married or divorced, a certified copy of marriage certificate/divorce decree authenticated and translated by the government or representative of the country of the country you are a citizen of, to be included. Even in case where applicant is not travelling with the spouse.
- In case of deaths kindly, attach death certificate.
- Confirmed reservation of the accommodation.
- Date on hotel reservation should be after the Turn around visa processing time i.e. if application is submitted on the 23rd July reservation should be any day after 28th July
- If staying with a host who is a citizen, PR holder or temporary resident visa holder in RSA, provide:

Work Visa General

Overview
General work Visas are valid for the duration of the contract of employment or a period not exceeding 5 years. A general work permit shall lapse if within 6 months of issuance and if every year thereafter the holder fails to submit satisfactory proof to the Director-General that he/she is still employed along with proof of the terms and conditions of the job, and the job description

Documents Required

- Two recent passport, size colour photographs (35mmx45mm) with white background. (Refer to photo specifications for detailed description of the requirements.)

- Passport should have at least three (3) sheets available.
- Valid passport, which expires in no less than 90 days after expiry of the intended date of departure from the Republic. (9(1)(a)
- Copy of passport certified by issuing office/embassy/commissioner of oats if there is no embassy in Botswana.
- Copy of Botswana residence permits for foreigners resident in Botswana with a validity of 90 days at the time of submission certified by Botswana Immigration. Valid Botswana.
- The application is being submitted in person, no less than 60 days prior to the expiry date of the applicant’s visa and if the visa was issued for less than 30 days, not later than seven working days before the expiry of the visa.
- A copy of yellow fever vaccination certificate if that person travelled or intends travelling from or transiting through a yellow fever endemic area: (Provided that the certificate shall not be required where that person travelled or intends travelling in direct transit through such area)
- Original Police clearance certificate issued by the police or security authority in each country where the relevant applicant resided for 12 months or longer after attaining the age of 18 years, in respect of criminal records or the character of that applicant, which certificate shall not be older than six months at the time of its submission: (Provided that the certificate shall not be required from a foreign country in the case of renewal or extension of a visa). The Police clearance certificate shall be required in a situation where one is born in a Botswana but is a citizen of another country e.g. Born in Botswana to Zimbabwean parents, a Zimbabwean police clearance will be required.
- A medical report.
- A radiological report. Provided that a radiological report shall not be required in respect of children under the age of 12 years or pregnant women;(If pregnant please bring doctor’s letter confirming the pregnancy)
- Copy of marriage certificate or in the case of a foreign spousal relationship, proof of official recognition thereof issued by the authorities of the foreign country of the applicant certified by issuing office. (Where applicable).
- The affidavit where a spousal relationship to a South African citizen or resident is applicable, as well as documentation proving cohabitation and the extent to which the related financial responsibilities are shared by the parties and setting out the particulars of children in the spousal relationship.
- Divorce decree, where applicable.
- Court order granting full or specific parental responsibilities and rights, where applicable.
- Death certificate, in respect of late spouse, where applicable.
- Written consent from both parents and full parental responsibilities, where applicable.
- Proof of adoption where applicable.
- Legal separation order, where applicable.
- A written undertaking by the employer accepting responsibility for the costs related to the deportation of the applicant and his or her dependent family members, should it become necessary.
- Valid contract of employment clearly indicating duration of contract, position and job description (Duties) and duly signed.
- A written undertaking by the employer to ensure that the passport of his or her employee is valid at all times for the duration of his or her employment
- A certificate by the Department of Labor confirming that-
- despite diligent search, the prospective employer has been unable to find a suitable citizen or permanent resident with qualifications or skills and experience equivalent to those of the applicant;
- the applicant has qualifications or proven skills and experience in line with the job offer;
- the salary and benefits of the applicant are not inferior to the average salary and benefits of citizens or employees occupying similar positions in the Republic;
- a contract of employment stipulating the conditions of employment and signed by both the employer and the applicant in line with the labour standards in the Republic and is made conditional upon the general work visa being approved;
- Proof of qualifications evaluated by SAQA (South African qualifications authority) and translated by a sworn
- Translated into one of the official languages of the Republic; and
- Full particulars of the employer, including, where applicable, proof of registration of the business with the Commission on Intellectual Property and Companies (CIPC).
- An undertaking by the employer to inform the Director-General; should the applicant not comply with the provisions of the Act, or conditions of the visa.
- An undertaking by the employer to inform the Director-General upon the employee no longer being in the employ of such employer or when he or she is employed in a different capacity or role.
- Curriculum Vitae of applicant along with certified copies of educational qualification certificates.
- Applicable references from the applicant relevant to the position being offered.
- Proof of residence in RSA in the form of a title deed & utility bill/lease agreement (12 months validity)
- If staying with a host who is a citizen, PR holder or temporary resident visa holder in RSA, provide:
- Invitation letter (should state duration of stay)
- Hosts recent municipality water and light bill (Certified From The RSA Police)
- Hosts certified copy of ID/permit or proof of PR (Certified From The RSA Police)
- Hosts recent 3 months bank statement stamped from the bank with minimum of P3000.00 per person.
- Host should show proof of relation with the applicant

Work Visa : Critical Skills

Overview
Critical Skills Visa applications can be made at any Visa Facilitation Centre in Botswana. Please note that an applicant must ensure he/she falls under the Critical Skills category before applying for a visa or permit.

Note : All current holders of Quota work permit who are required to submit annual reports as a condition of their permit are advised to follow the procedure mentioned below:
- Previously the client would approach the regional office of Home Affairs and submit the required documents as part of their reporting. With the repealing of the Quota work permit this function has not be carried over to VFS. To remedy the situation and to ensure a smoother transition, an email address: quota.reports@dha.gov.za has been set up to allow the clients to continue to comply with the condition of Quota Reporting. Clients will not be required to approach VFS for this service.
- Current holders of Quota work permits are advised to submit CLEAR and READABLE copies of the following documents via the email address mentioned above:
- Valid contract of employment,
- Certified Proof of registration with relevant professional body, board or council, where required,
- Comprehensive CV,
- Testimonials,
- Certified Proof of SAQA evaluation certificate of qualifications; and
- Certified copies of pages in passport reflecting personal details and quota work permit obtained.
- On receipt of the required documents the Department of Home Affairs will issue the client with a compliance letter confirming whether the client continues to comply with the conditions of the work visa issued to them. The compliance letter will be signed and scanned back to the applicant via the email from which the applicant sent the required documents.

- A copy of yellow fever vaccination certificate if that person travelled or intends travelling from or transiting through a yellow fever endemic area: (Provided that the certificate shall not be required where that person travelled or intends travelling in direct transit through such area)
- A written undertaking by the employer accepting responsibility for the costs related to the deportation of the applicant and his or her dependent family members, should it become necessary
- A written undertaking by the employer to ensure that the passport of his or her employee is valid at all times for the duration of his or her employment
- Valid contract of employment clearly indicating duration of contract, position and job description (Duties) and duly signed.
- Proof that the applicant falls within the critical skills category by specifically indicating the occupation/critical skill for which the application is being made. The occupation/critical skill must be on the Critical Skills list. ( List of Critical Skills as per Gazette)
- Proof of evaluation of the foreign qualification by SAQA and translated by a sworn translator into one of the official languages of the Republic.
- If required by law, proof of application for a certificate of registration with the professional body, council or board recognized by South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) in terms of section 13(1)(i) of the National Qualifications Framework Act;
- A confirmation, in writing, from the professional body, council or board recognized by SAQA in terms of section 13(1)(0 of the National Qualifications Framework Act, or any relevant government Department confirming the skills or qualifications of the applicant and appropriate post qualification experience, (Candidate registrations are not accepted.)
- Curriculum Vitae of applicant along with certified copies of educational qualification certificates certified by the issuing office.
- Applicable references from the applicant relevant to the position being offered.
- Proof of sufficient financial means contemplated in sub-regulation (3). Three months recent bank statement with a BANK STAMP on it with not less than P3000.00 per applicant. If you submit business bank statements, remember to bring the bank signatory letter.
- Proof of residence in RSA in the form of a title deed & utility bill/lease agreement (12 months validity)
- If staying with a host who is a citizen, PR holder or temporary resident visa holder in RSA, provide:

Overview
Occasionally, multi-national companies may decide to transfer an existing employee from a foreign branch to a branch in South Africa. These employees must apply for intra-company transfer work permits. In such cases, no proof of steps taken to obtain the services of a South African citizen/permanent residence will be required.

- A letter from the company abroad (Botswana) confirming that the foreigner shall be transferred to a branch, subsidiary or an affiliate of that company in the Republic of South Africa
- Skills transfer schedule outlining specific dates, activities and skills to be transferred and certified ID copies, Curriculum vitae, employment contract and certified documents of qualifications of the recipients who will benefit from the skills transfer.
- Company documents (company registration documents) both from the company abroad (Botswana) and in the Republic of South Africa.
- A letter from the branch, subsidiary or an affiliate in the Republic of South Africa confirming the transfer of the foreigner and specifying the occupation and capacity in which that foreigner shall be employed. Along with a contract of employment from the receiving branch/company.
- A signed agreement between the two companies if the company in the Republic of South Africa is not a subsidiary to the company abroad (Botswana) or vice versa.
- An undertaking by the employer in the Republic of South Africa that:
- The foreigner is only employed in the specific position for which the visa has been issued;
- The foreign employee will at all times comply with the provisions of the Act and conditions of his or her visa and undertakes to immediately notify the Director-General if the employee refuses to comply with the provisions of the Act or conditions of the visa; and
- A plan is developed for the transfer of skills to a South African citizen or permanent resident.
- An undertaking by the employer in the Republic of South Africa to reimburse the Department any costs incurred in relation to the deportation of the holder of an intra-company transfer work visa and any of his or her dependent family members.
- Curriculum Vitae of applicant along with certified copies of educational qualification certificates.
- References
- Proof of residence in RSA in the form of a title deed & utility bill/lease agreement(12 validity)

Corporate Visa

Overview
A corporate permit allows a corporate entity (e.g. a mine group, farmer, etc.) to employ a pre-determined number of skilled/semi-skilled/unskilled workers. There is no fixed validity period for such permits as the validity period is determined and stipulated by the corporate entity upon application. A corporate visa is issued for a period not exceeding three years. Applications must be made at a Visa & Permit Facilitation Centre close to applicant’s residence.

- a certificate by the Department of Labour confirming:
- that despite diligent search, the corporate applicant was unable to find suitable citizens or permanent residents to occupy the position available in the corporate entity;
- the job description and proposed remuneration in respect of each foreigner;
- that the salary and benefits of any foreigner employed by the corporate applicant shall not be inferior to the average salary and benefits of citizens or permanent residents occupying similar positions in the Republic (Note: An acknowledgement letter from DoL confirming that this information has been sent to DHA electronically may also be accepted)
- proof of registration of the corporation with South African Revenue Service
- proof of registration of the corporation with Unemployment Insurance Fund
- proof of registration of the corporation with Compensation Fund for Occupational Injuries and Diseases
- proof of registration of the corporation with Companies and Intellectual Properties Commission (CIPC), where legally required
- an undertaking by the employer to inform the Director-General should any foreign employee not comply with the provisions of the Act or visa conditions or is no longer in the employ of such employer or is employed in a different capacity or role; and
- a written undertaking by the corporate applicant to pay the deportation costs of any foreign employee accepting responsibility for the return costs related to the deportation of the foreign employee, should it be necessary.
- proof that at least 60% of the total staff complement that are employed in the operations of the business are citizens or permanent residents employed permanently in various positions.
- An undertaking by the corporate applicant giving assurance that:
- the passport of the foreigner shall be valid at all times;
- the foreigner shall be employed by the corporate applicant to conduct work for the corporate applicant only in the specific position for which the visa has been issued;
- such foreigner departs from the Republic upon completion of his or her contract of employment;
- any foreigner employed in terms of the corporate visa at all times complies with the-
- provisions of the Act; and
- terms and conditions of the corporate visa and of the corporate work certificate;
- the Director-General is immediately notified if there is reason to believe that the foreigner is no longer in compliance with the provisions of the Act; and
- the financial guarantees by the corporate applicant to defray deportation and other costs should the corporate visa be withdrawn, or certain foreigners fail to leave the Republic when no longer subject to the corporate visa, are complied with.
- Confirmation by the corporate applicant that the application is not for any business undertaking which is listed as undesirable by the Minister from time to time in the Gazette,

Study Visa

Overview
Study permits are valid for the duration of the course for which they are issued, alternatively 36 months for school and 24 months for other institutions.
As a holder of a study permit you may also apply for permission to work for the purposes of getting work experience, as part of your studies to obtain a diploma or degree by submitting:
- an offer to do practical training
- consent from the educational institution
- proof that your are still a registered student
The Department’s consent to get practical training as part of your studies is issued free of charge provided that you are a registered student and that your study permit remains valid for the entire duration of the training period.
Alternatively, as a foreigner studying at a higher educational institution with a valid study permit, you may work part-time for no more than 20 hours per week. However, you may not work during academic vacations.
The overriding consideration in processing applications for study permits are that:
- No foreigner may displace a South African citizen/resident at a local educational institution
- The student must have proof of sufficient funds to pay for day-to-day living expenses, accommodation as well as tuition fees during his/her stay in South Africa
- The student must have adequate medical cover with a registered South African medical scheme and proof thereof

- An official letter confirming provisional acceptance or acceptance at that learning institution and the duration of the course (Stating date-always a future date or else confirmation of space and end date e.g. May 2019- Dec 2020)
- It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the learning institution is registered with the Department of Higher education and Training and Department of Basic Education. Proof to be submitted along with the application. Acceptance letters from government schools will NOT be accepted unless if the applicant is paying school fees.
- Provide a recent academic transcript for students renewing their study visas
- An undertaking by the Registrar or Principal of the learning institution to-
- provide proof of registration as contemplated in the relevant legislation within 60 days of registration; or
- In the event of failure to register by the closing date, provide the Director-General with a notification of failure to register within 7 days of the closing date of registration;
- Within 30 days, notify the Director-General that the applicant is no longer registered with such institution; and
- Within 30 days, notify the Director-General when the applicant has completed his or her studies or requires to extend such period of study
- A written undertaking from such foreign state to pay for the departure of the applicant.
- An official letter confirming provisional acceptance or acceptance at that learning institution and the duration of the course.
- An undertaking by the Registrar or Principal of the learning institution to-
- provide proof of registration as contemplated in the relevant legislation within 60 days of registration; or
- In the event of failure to register by the closing date, provide the Director-General with a notification of failure to register within 7 days of the closing date of registration;
- Within 30 days, notify the Director-General that the applicant is no longer registered with such institution; and
- Within 30 days, notify the Director-General when the applicant has completed his or her studies or requires to extend such period of study
- In addition to the above requirements, in the case of a learner under the age of 18 years-
- A certified copy of an unabridged birth certificate;
- a valid passport;
- proof of physical address and contact number of the adult person residing in the Republic, who is acting or has accepted to act as such learner's guardian, including a confirmatory letter from that guardian; and
- proof of consent for the intended stay from both parents, or where applicable, from the parent or legal guardian who has been issued with a court order granting full or specific parental responsibilities and rights or legal guardianship of the learner.
- Proof of medical cover renewed annually for the period of study with a medical scheme registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act. Covered for at least 12 months under South African recognized medical schemes. Botswana Medical Aid Schemes are not accepted.
- An undertaking by the parents or legal guardian that the learner will have medical cover for the full duration of the period of study
- Proof of sufficient financial means available to the learner whilst resident in the Republic, to be proven by means of a current salary advice or a certified bank statement not older than three months at the time of application, stamped and signed at the bank.(Signatory letters from banks for company bank statements).

- If you own a property in RSA, provide certified copy of your title deed with recent municipality water and light bill (certified by RSA Police)
- If you are renting provide a lease agreement with recent municipality water and light bill. Provide certified copy of Landlord ID’s ID ( certified from RSA Police)
- If staying with a host who is a citizen, PR holder or temporary resident visa holder in RSA, provide:
- In respect of an application by a person who is a learner under the age of 18 years and is a dependent child of the holder of a visa issued in terms of section 11, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20 or 22 of the Act, a certified copy of such holder's visa and a written undertaking by parents or legal guardian that the learner will have medical cover for the full duration of the period of study shall be required.
- Where the learner is under the age of 18 years and is a dependent child of the holder of a visa issued in terms of section 11, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20 or 22 of the Act, there is no need for a separate medical aid membership for the applicant where proof exists that the learner is a registered dependent on a medical scheme of a holder of a valid visa.
- If the applicant for a study visa is the main applicant and is not accompanying a holder of a valid visa issued in terms of section 11, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20 or 22 of the Act, then proof of medical cover renewed annually for the period of study with a medical scheme registered in terms of the South African Medical Schemes Act shall be required.
- Visas issued for studies at a learning institution, other than a school contemplated in section 1 of the South African Schools Act, 1996 (Act No. 84 of 1996), shall be issued for the duration of the course for which the applicant has registered;
- Visas issued for studies at a learning institution, which is a school contemplated in section 1 of the South African Schools Act, 1996 (Act No. 84 of 1996), shall be valid for the duration of the period of study: Provided that the study visa issued for studies at a primary school shall not exceed eight years and for a secondary school shall not exceed six years.
- However, any visa issued for studies at all learning institutions to a learner who is a dependent child of the holder of a visa issued in terms of section 11, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20 or 22 of the Act, shall NOT be issued longer than the validity period of the visa issued to the accompanied parent or accompanied holder of the section 11, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20 or 22 visa of the Act.

Medical Visa applications can be made at any Visa Facilitation Centre in Botswana. Please note that a medical permit holder may not work or apply for work while in the country.

- Copy of Botswana residence permits for foreigners resident in Botswana with a validity of 90 days at the time of submission certified by Botswana Immigration. Waivers will not be accepted.
- Valid passport which expires in no less than 30 days after expiry of the intended date of departure from the Republic
- Copy of passport certified by issuing office/embassy/commissioner of oats if there is no embassy in Botswana.
- The application is being submitted in person, no less than 60 days prior to the expiry date of the applicant’s visa and if the visa was issued for less than 30 days, not later than seven working days before the expiry of the visa.
- A stamped and signed referral letter from the applicant's registered medical practitioner or medical institution from Botswana.
- A letter from the applicant's registered medical practitioner or medical institution within the Republic, confirming-
- That space is available at the medical institution;
- The estimated costs of the treatment;
- Whether or not the disease or ailment is treatable or curable;
- The treatment schedule; and
- The period of intended treatment in the Republic.
- The details of, and confirmation by, the person or institution responsible for the medical expenses and hospital fees: (Provided that in a case where the applicant's medical scheme or employer is not liable for expenses incurred, proof of financial means to cover medical costs).
- The particulars of the persons accompanying the applicant
- A valid return air flight ticket, where applicable
- Proof of sufficient financial means in the form of a current 3 months bank statement indicating the provision for the costs indirectly related to the treatment.(Provided that in a case where the applicant's medical scheme or employer is not liable for expenses incurred, proof of financial means in the form of 3 months bank statements to cover medical costs. Stamped and signed at the bank with a minimum of P3000.00 closing balance).
- Confirmed reservation with proof of transactional payment of the accommodation.
- If staying with a host who is a citizen, PR holder or temporary resident visa holder in RSA, provide:
- Invitation letter (should state duration of stay)
- Hosts recent municipality water and light bill
- Hosts certified copy of ID/permit or proof of PR
- Hosts recent 3 months bank statement stamped from the bank with minimum of 3000.00 per person
- Host should show proof of relation with the applicant
If your host is a business owner or partner in RSA, there may be additional documents e.g. 60% proof of employment of RSA citizens or PR holders as well as the organizational structure of that business in RSA
- If you own a property in RSA, provide certified copy of your title deed with recent municipality water and/or light bill.
- If you are renting a property, provide a lease agreement with recent municipality water and/or light bill.
Notes:
- Except in the case of medical treatment OR if the applicant is the spouse or dependent child of the holder of a business or work visa, the holder of a port of entry visa, visitor's visa and medical treatment visa may not apply for a change of conditions or status of an existing visa, unless he or she is in possession of a letter issued on behalf of the Minister of Home Affairs that good cause had been demonstrated for the submission of such an application.

Retired Persons Visa

Overview
A persons who wish to retire in South Africa may apply for a retired person visa, provided that he or she receives at least R37 000 per month from a pension fund or an irrevocable retirement annuity or has a net worth or a combination of assets realising a minimum monthly income of R37 000.

- the right to a pension or an irrevocable annuity or retirement account which will give such foreigner a prescribed minimum payment of R37 000 per month for the rest of his or her life from the country of his or her origin; or
- a minimum prescribed net worth R37 000 which may include a combination of assets realising per month.

Overview
A treaty permit is an official document that gives foreigners permission to enter South Africa to participate in programmes that have been agreed upon by South Africa and the visitors’ respective countries. Relatives Visa

Overview
As an immediate family member of a South African citizen or permanent resident you may be issued a relative's permit once the financial means as contemplated in the Immigration Act, 2002 (Act No. 13 of 2002) have been complied with. Relative’s permits are valid for a minimum period of 24 months and may be extended.
Applications can be made at a Visa & Permit Facilitation Centre close to applicant’s residence. For a spouse and/or a dependent child of a South African citizen or permanent resident the permit is issued free of charge, whilst there is a fee for other relatives wishing to join their family members in South Africa.

- A copy of yellow fever vaccination certificate if that person travelled or intends travelling from or transiting through a yellow fever endemic area: (Provided that the certificate shall not be required where that person travelled or intends travelling in direct transit through such area)
- Original Police clearance certificate issued by the police or security authority in each country where the relevant applicant resided for 12 months or longer after attaining the age of 18 years, in respect of criminal records or the character of that applicant, which certificate shall not be older than six months at the time of its submission: (Provided that the certificate shall not be required from a foreign country in the case of renewal or extension of a visa). The Police clearance certificate shall be required in a situation where one is born in a Botswana but is a citizen of another country e.g. Born in Botswana to Zimbabwean parents, a Zimbabwean police clearance will be required.
- A medical report not older than 6 months
- A radiological report. Provided that a radiological report shall not be required in respect of children under the age of 12 years or pregnant women. (If pregnant please bring doctor’s letter confirming the pregnancy);
- Copy of marriage certificate or in the case of a foreign spousal relationship, proof of official recognition thereof issued by the authorities of the foreign country of the applicant certified by issuing office. (Where applicable).
- In case of a foreign marriage certificate where spousal relationship is to a South African citizen, provide proof that the marriage is registered in South Africa.
- Confirmation by a South African Citizen or permanent resident confirming that the marriage still exist and undertaking regarding financial, emotional and physical responsibility towards his/her foreign spouse.
- Divorce decree, where applicable.
- Court order granting full or specific parental responsibilities and rights, where applicable.
- Death certificate, in respect of late spouse, where applicable.
- Written consent from both parents and full parental responsibilities, where applicable.

Overview
Exchange permits may be issued to foreigners who are not older than 25 years of age and wish to participate in cultural, economic or social exchange programmes administered by an organ of the State or a public higher educational institution in conjunction with an organ of a foreign state.

In addition to the above requirements, in the case of a learning institution in the Republic, in conjunction with a foreign education and training institution or a foreign state institution organising or administering the programme, submit a letter from:
- proof of a valid return air flight ticket or written undertaking by the organ of state or learning institution accepting responsibility for the return or deportation costs of the applicant, as the case may be
- proof of medical cover for the duration of the exchange period with a medical scheme registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act.
- the Department of Basic Education or Higher Education and Training or a learning institution in the Republic confirming that it is responsible for organising or administering the existence of the programme, outlining the activities, terms and conditions and duration thereof and accepting full responsibility for the student while he or she is in the Republic; and
- the foreign state institution or education and training institution confirming the particulars of the applicant, the applicant's enrolment with the foreign education and training institution, and the date on which the programme shall commence.
In addition to the above requirements, in the case of a programme of cultural, economic or social exchange organised or administered by an organ of state or a learning institution, in conjunction with a foreign education and training institution or a foreign state institution, submit a letter from:
- proof of a valid return air flight ticket or written undertaking by the organ of state or learning institution accepting responsibility for the return or deportation costs of the applicant, as the case may be
- Proof of medical cover for the duration of the exchange period with a medical scheme registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act.
- The organ of state or foreign education and training institution confirming the existence of the exchange programme; or
- The foreign education and training institution confirming the enrolment of the applicant or the foreign state institution conducting the programme, as the case may be.
In addition to the above requirements, in the case of a foreigner who is under 25 years of age and has received an offer to conduct work for no longer than one year
- Proof of a valid return air flight ticket or written undertaking by the employer accepting responsibility for the return or deportation costs of the applicant, as the case may be
- Proof of medical cover for the duration of the exchange period with a medical scheme registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act.
- A written undertaking by the employer to—
- Pay such foreigner remuneration which complies with applicable legal requirements;
- Provide for the welfare and the needs of such foreigner while in the Republic under the aforesaid visa; and
- report to the Director-General the failure of the foreigner to comply with the terms of his or her visa or to depart when so required;
- Duly completed application form in black ink
- Passport valid for no less than 30 calendar days after expiry of the intended visit.
- A medical report.
- A radiological report.
- Marriage certificate or in the case of a foreign spousal relationship, proof of official recognition thereof issued by the authorities of the foreign country of the applicant (where applicable).
- The affidavit where a spousal relationship to a South African citizen or resident is applicable as well as documentation proving cohabitation and the extent to which the related financial responsibilities are shared by the parties and setting out the particulars of children in the spousal relationship.
- Proof of a union recognised in terms of the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act, 1998 (Act No. 120 of 1998), where applicable.
- Divorce decree, where applicable.
- Proof of court order awarding custody, where applicable.
- Death certificate, in respect of late spouse, where applicable.
- Written consent from both parents and/or sole custody parent, where applicable, with proof of sole custody.
- Proof of legal adoption where applicable.
- Legal separation order, where applicable.
- Original Police clearance certificate issued by the police or security authority in each country where the relevant applicant resided for 12 months or longer after attaining the age of 18 years except for South Africa, in respect of criminal records or the character of that applicant, which certificate shall not be older than six months at the time of its submission: (Provided that the certificate shall not be required from a foreign country in the case of renewal or extension of a visa)
- a yellow fever vaccination certificate if that person travelled or intends travelling from or transiting through a yellow fever endemic area: (Provided that the certificate shall not be required where that person travelled or intends travelling in direct transit through such area)
- Proof of payment of the applicable fee
In addition to the above requirements, in the case of a learning institution in the Republic, in conjunction with a foreign education and training institution or a foreign state institution organising or administering the programme, submit a letter from:
- Proof of a valid return air flight ticket or written undertaking by the organ of state or learning institution accepting responsibility for the return or deportation costs of the applicant, as the case may be
- Proof of medical cover for the duration of the exchange period with a medical scheme registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act.
- the Department of Basic Education or Higher Education and Training or a learning institution in the Republic confirming that it is responsible for organising or administering the existence of the programme, outlining the activities, terms and conditions and duration thereof and accepting full responsibility for the student while he or she is in the Republic; and
- the foreign state institution or education and training institution confirming the particulars of the applicant, the applicant's enrolment with the foreign education and training institution, and the date on which the programme shall commence.
In addition to the above requirements, in the case of a programme of cultural, economic or social exchange, organised or administered by an organ of state or a learning institution, in conjunction with a foreign education and training institution or a foreign state institution, submit a letter from:
- Proof of a valid return air flight ticket or written undertaking by the organ of state or learning institution accepting responsibility for the return or deportation costs of the applicant, as the case may be
- Proof of medical cover for the duration of the exchange period with a medical scheme registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act.
- The organ of state or foreign education and training institution confirming the existence of the exchange programme; or
- The foreign education and training institution confirming the enrolment of the applicant or the foreign state institution conducting the programme, as the case may be.
In addition to the above requirements, in the case of a foreigner who is under 25 years of age and has received an offer to conduct work for no longer than one year
- Proof of a valid return air flight ticket or written undertaking by the employer accepting responsibility for the return or deportation costs of the applicant, as the case may be
- Proof of medical cover for the duration of the exchange period with a medical scheme registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act.
- A written undertaking by the employer to—
- Pay such foreigner remuneration which complies with applicable legal requirements;
- Provide for the welfare and the needs of such foreigner while in the Republic under the aforesaid visa; and
- Report to the Director-General the failure of the foreigner to comply with the terms of his or her visa or to depart when so required;

Overview
ALL APPLICANTS MUST APPLY IN PERSON
- Proof of financial – 3 months bank statement, certified by bank and not older than 7 days from the time of application.
- Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Please, bear in mind that failing to meet any of the following requirements will also render the application incomplete
- All supporting documents should be duly certified by the issuing office.
- Invitation letter from host in South Africa must be signed;
- For minors, certified copy of birth certificate, certified copies of both biological parents’ Passports (Bio-page) and an affidavit signed by both biological parents and certified by a Commissioner of Oaths will be required. Additional documents will be required in case either of the natural parents is unable to sign.
- Payment Options – Direct Deposit into the bank (Only after application has been checked for completeness) & Card only.
- Please note applicants should be aware of the Processing Time for Permanent Residence Permit and apply accordingly. Please also note that all processing times are minimum as stated, and in some cases may take longer.
- All application forms filled by hand must be original in BLACK INK only. Scanned copies or signatures of application forms will strictly not be accepted.
- Only applicants with a Botswana residential status are eligible to apply in Botswana.
- Documents issued in a foreign language must be officially translated to English by a sworn translator.

Visa Fees
Visa Fee :- BWP 1262.00 (All Visa Fees are NON REFUNDABLE)
There is an additional non-refundable service charge of BWP 1,630.00 (inclusive of TAX) per application in addition to the visa fees for all applicants. Both fees must be paid only at the Visa Application Centre.
The Special Delivery facility for the return of Passports is available at a fee of BWP 133.00 (Inclusive of TAX) per application. This is an optional service and can be paid at the Visa Application Centre.
The SMS facility for updates on your application is available at a fee of BWP 26.60 (Inclusive of TAX) per application. This is an optional service and can be paid at the Visa Application Centre.

Processing Time
