Short Term Visa
In South Africa, short stay visas are issued for a maximum of three months. Short stay visas do not allow the applicant to switch into a longer term South African immigration service.
Passport holders who are exempt from visas for South Africa are subject to change without notice.
The citizen who is a holder of a national passport (diplomatic, official and ordinary) of the foreign countries / territories / international organisations listed below are not required to hold a visa when reporting to an immigration officer for an examination at a South African port of entry, subject to the terms and conditions set out in this list.

Visitor Visa

Overview
PURPOSE OF A VISA
A visa only enables the holder to proceed to a port of entry before or on the expiry date of the visa, where the holder must comply with the applicable law, regulations and the following requirements of the Republic of South Africa. No fixed travel arrangements must be made prior to the issuing of the visa and an average of 5 working days must be allowed for the processing thereof.
DURATION AND PURPOSE OF STAY
The period of residence in the RSA will be determined from the applicant’s date of admission to the Republic in accordance with any conditions that may appear on the visa. On admission, the visa will be deemed to be a visitor’s permit. Applicant must ensure that they request the full duration of their intended visits as renewals are subject to additional fees.
Applicant must also ensure that they apply for the correct visa reflecting the true purpose of the visit, as any change in the purpose of stay will only be approved in the RSA for good cause and if the requirements of the Act are complied with.
WARNING
Any applicant allowed entry into South Africa due to any misrepresentation, or false declaration on application form or who sojourns in the Republic in contravention of his / her visa permit conditions shall be guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to a fine or to imprisonment as an illegal foreigner
The Embassy /Consulate General will not accept passports that are manually/hand written renewed or extended.
Please Note: Those who do not reside or hold a valid residency visa for DR Congo, cannot apply for a visa to South Africa from DR Congo.
You can submit your application only 1 month prior to your date of travel.
IMPORTANT: All diplomatic passport holders need to submit their application at the South Africa Embassy /Consulate General in DR Congo
NOTE:
Applicant’s whose visa applications have been denied have the choice to re-apply immediately providing all the supporting documents as per the Check-list for the visa category they wish to apply for.
Applicants who wish to appeal against the decision of rejection must visit the Visa Application Centre within 10 working days from the date of rejection, to fill an Appeal form which will then be submitted to the Embassy /.Consulateica in DRC to review the decision. The processing may take from 6 months to 1 year; during this period till the decision of the appeal has been made the applicant cannot re-apply to South Africa.

Documents required to apply for a South Africa visa
- A passport or travel document valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of your intended visit
- Your passport must have at least TWO unused page for entry / departure endorsements
- A completed Form BI-84 (application for a visa)
- Payment of the prescribed fee
- A yellow-fever vaccination certificate (if required)
- Statement and/or documentation confirming the purpose and duration of your visit
- Two color passport photographs
- A return or onward ticket if you are travelling by air
- Proof of accommodation
- Proof of financial means to pay for your living expenses while in South Africa
- If you have children (minors) travelling with you or joining in South Africa, you will need to provide the following additional documents
- Proof of guardianship or custody or detail child’s birth certificate
- Consent from the guardian in the case of an unaccompanied minor

Specifications
The successful delivery of some of the department's services relies not only on our efforts. You have the responsibility of providing the Department with the correct documentation. Please find details below for all supporting documentation that the department requires:
Photographs
Photographs submitted for identity documents and passports must comply to the following specifications:
- Length - 45mm
- Width - 35mm
- The background of the photograph shall be plain and free of shadows and shall not have a white lining
- Only the head and shoulders of the person concerned shall be included in the photograph and the head from the chin to the top of the hair shall not be smaller 22mm and not larger than 25mm
- The person concerned shall be photographed without any head-gear or veil, and any other additions to the face which tend to alter the natural likeness shall be removed. (The Director-General may exempt any person or any category of persons from any of these requirements.)
- Spectacles may be worn provided that the lenses do not make the eyes invisible. Spectacles with dark lenses may be worn if the eyes will appear distorted without them or if the person is blind
- The full-face of the person concerned shall be photographed directly from the front, and the head may not be bent or turned sideways
- The face shall be a recognizable likeness of the person and the head, hair, eyebrows, eyes, nose and moustache or beard, if any, shall be sharply and clearly defined
- Neither the photograph nor the copies thereof may be defaced by holes, pencil or ink marks or in any other manner

Processing Time
Applicants who have submitted their application at the Visa application centres can collect the passport from the application centre after 5 working days from the date of submission. The collection timing is 08.00 am-0 3.00 pm (Monday-Friday except holidays).
However visa applicants should bear in mind that each application is subject to an individual assessment and processing time may vary. Hence, 5 working days time mentioned is minimum and may vary.
Applicants’ need to bring their receipt that was issued to them at the time of submission of visa application.

Remote work Visa

Overview
PURPOSE OF A VISA

Remote Work visitor’s visa in respect of a foreigner who is required to stay in the Republic in order to conduct work for a foreign employer pursuant to a contract, which partially requires conducting of certain activities in the Republic.
The holder of a Remote Work visitor’s visa is not entitled to take up employment in South Africa. As per existing Immigration Regulations, no person holding a remote work visa may apply for a change of status to his or her visa while in the Republic, unless under exceptional circumstances as prescribed for visitors visas.
Applicant must also ensure that they apply for the correct visa reflecting the true purpose of the visit, as any change in the purpose of stay will only be approved in the RSA for good cause and if the requirements of the Act are complied with.

Documents required to apply for a Remote work visa
- Duly completed and signed application form
- Your passport must have at least TWO unused page for entry / departure endorsements
- A statement or documentation explaining the purpose and duration of the visit.
- A valid return air flight ticket or proof of reservation thereof
- Proof of sufficient financial means, defined as a gross salary of no less than the equivalent of R650 796, 00 per annum in the form of three months bank statements
- Valid passport which expires in no less than 30 days after expiry of the intended date of departure from the Republic in terms of regulation 9(1)(a).
- Two color passport photographs
- A yellow fever vaccination certificate if an applicant travelled or intends travelling from or transiting through a yellow fever endemic are, provided that the certificate shall not be required where an applicant travelled or intends travelling in direct transit through such area.
- Valid contract of employment signed by both the applicant and the foreign based employer.
- Proof of payment of the applicable fee.

- Kindly note that patient going for more than 90 days must contact either at Embassy in Kinshasa or at Consulate General in Lubumbashi.
- ID & national registration number of the Congolese resident in South Africa, if sponsoring the visiting patient.

The successful delivery of some of the department's services relies not only on our efforts. You have the responsibility of providing the Department with the correct documentation. Please find details below for all supporting documentation that the department requires:
Photographs
Photographs submitted for identity documents and passports must comply to the following specifications:
- Length - 45mm
- Width - 35mm
- The background of the photograph shall be plain and free of shadows and shall not have a white lining
- Only the head and shoulders of the person concerned shall be included in the photograph and the head from the chin to the top of the hair shall not be smaller 22mm and not larger than 25mm
- The person concerned shall be photographed without any head-gear or veil, and any other additions to the face which tend to alter the natural likeness shall be removed. (The Director-General may exempt any person or any category of persons from any of these requirements.)
- Spectacles may be worn provided that the lenses do not make the eyes invisible. Spectacles with dark lenses may be worn if the eyes will appear distorted without them or if the person is blind
- The full-face of the person concerned shall be photographed directly from the front, and the head may not be bent or turned sideways
- The face shall be a recognizable likeness of the person and the head, hair, eyebrows, eyes, nose and moustache or beard, if any, shall be sharply and clearly defined
- Neither the photograph nor the copies thereof may be defaced by holes, pencil or ink marks or in any other manner

Processing Time
Applicants who have submitted their application at the Visa application centres can collect the passport from the application centre after 5 working days from the date of submission. The collection timing is 08.00 am-0 3.00 pm (Monday-Friday except holidays).
However visa applicants should bear in mind that each application is subject to an individual assessment and processing time may vary. Hence, 5 working days time mentioned is minimum and may vary.
Applicants’ need to bring their receipt that was issued to them at the time of submission of visa application.

DURATION AND PURPOSE OF STAY
The period of residence in the RSA will be determined from the applicant’s date of admission to the Republic in accordance with any conditions that may appear on the visa. On admission, the visa will be deemed to be a visitor’s permit. Applicant must ensure that they request the full duration of their intended visits as renewals are subject to additional fees.
Applicant must also ensure that they apply for the correct visa reflecting the true purpose of the visit, as any change in the purpose of stay will only be approved in the RSA for good cause and if the requirements of the Act are complied with.
WARNING
Any applicant allowed entry into South Africa due to any misrepresentation, or false declaration on application form or who sojourns in the Republic in contravention of his / her visa permit conditions shall be guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to a fine or to imprisonment as an illegal foreigner
The Embassy /Consulate General will not accept passports that are manually/hand written renewed or extended.
Please Note: Those who do not reside or hold a valid residency visa for DR Congo, cannot apply for a visa to South Africa from DR Congo.
You can submit your application only 1 month prior to your date of travel.

- Your passport must have at least TWO unused page for entry / departure endorsements

- If you have children (minors) travelling with you or joining in South Africa, you will need to provide the following additional documents
- Proof of guardianship or custody or detail child’s birth certificate
- Consent from the guardian in the case of an unaccompanied minor
- Certificate of Enrollment from the institution of South Africa, detailing course and the duration of the course
- If a service man going for a vocational short term study, need employer’s specific NOC
- Proof of funds to support study course and the stay in South Africa for that period, sprcified.If against scholarship, details in original.
- If study course exceeds consecutive 90 days, then applicant must apply directly at South Africa Mission with all credentials and documents.

- Length - 45mm
- Width - 35mm
- The background of the photograph shall be plain and free of shadows and shall not have a white lining
- Only the head and shoulders of the person concerned shall be included in the photograph and the head from the chin to the top of the hair shall not be smaller 22mm and not larger than 25mm
- The person concerned shall be photographed without any head-gear or veil, and any other additions to the face which tend to alter the natural likeness shall be removed. (The Director-General may exempt any person or any category of persons from any of these requirements.)
- Spectacles may be worn provided that the lenses do not make the eyes invisible. Spectacles with dark lenses may be worn if the eyes will appear distorted without them or if the person is blind
- The full-face of the person concerned shall be photographed directly from the front, and the head may not be bent or turned sideways
- The face shall be a recognizable likeness of the person and the head, hair, eyebrows, eyes, nose and moustache or beard, if any, shall be sharply and clearly defined
- Neither the photograph nor the copies thereof may be defaced by holes, pencil or ink marks or in any other manner

Applicants who have submitted their application at the Visa application centres can collect the passport from the application centre after 5 working days from the date of submission. The collection timing is 08.00 am-0 3.00 pm (Monday-Friday except holidays).
However visa applicants should bear in mind that each application is subject to an individual assessment and processing time may vary. Hence, 5 working days time mentioned is minimum and may vary.
Applicants’ need to bring their receipt that was issued to them at the time of submission of visa application.

Overview
PURPOSE OF A VISA
A visa only enables the holder to proceed to a port of entry before or on the expiry date of the visa, where the holder must comply with the applicable law, regulations and the following requirements of the Republic of South Africa. No fixed travel arrangements must be made prior to the issuing of the visa and an average of 5 working days must be allowed for the processing thereof.
DURATION AND PURPOSE OF STAY
The period of residence in the RSA will be determined from the applicant’s date of admission to the Republic in accordance with any conditions that may appear on the visa. On admission, the visa will be deemed to be a visitor’s permit. Applicant must ensure that they request the full duration of their intended visits as renewals are subject to additional fees.
Applicant must also ensure that they apply for the correct visa reflecting the true purpose of the visit, as any change in the purpose of stay will only be approved in the RSA for good cause and if the requirements of the Act are complied with.
WARNING
Any applicant allowed entry into South Africa due to any misrepresentation, or false declaration on application form or who sojourns in the Republic in contravention of his / her visa permit conditions shall be guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to a fine or to imprisonment as an illegal foreigner
The Embassy /Consulate General will not accept passports that are manually/hand written renewed or extended.
Please Note: Those who do not reside or hold a valid residency visa for DR Congo, cannot apply for a visa to South Africa from DR Congo.

Applicant’s whose visa applications have been denied have the choice to re-apply immediately providing all the supporting documents as per the Check-list for the visa category they wish to apply for.
Applicants who wish to appeal against the decision of rejection must visit the Visa Application Centre within 10 working days from the date of rejection, to fill an Appeal form which will then be submitted to the Embassy /.Consulateica in DRC to review the decision. The processing may take from 6 months to 1 year; during this period till the decision of the appeal has been made the applicant cannot re-apply to South Africa.

Documents Required
To invest in or open a business in South Africa you will need to, along with Form BI-1738, submit a certificate issued by a chartered accountant registered with the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants to the effect that you have:
- At least an amount in cash to be invested in the Republic as determined from time to time by the Minister, after consultation with the Minister of Trade and Industry or
- At least an amount in cash and a capital contribution as determined from time to time by the Minister, is available.
- An undertaking by the applicant that atleast 60% of the total staff complement to be employed in the operations shall be South African Citizens or permanent residents, permanently employed in various positions.
- An undertaking to register with:
- The South African Revenue Service
- Unemployment Insurance Fund
- Compensation Fund for Occupational Injuries
- Companies and Intellectual Properties Commission, where legally required and
- Relevant professional body, board or council recognized by SAQA, where applicable.
- A police clearance certificate from each country where you resided since the age of 18 years, including the Republic of South Africa A letter of recommendation from the Department of Trade and Industry regarding –
- the feasibility of the business
- and the contribution to the national interest of the Republic.
- A yellow fever vaccination certificate if you have travelled or intend travelling through a yellow fever endemic area Medical and radiology reports

Overview
Occasionally, multi-national companies may decide to transfer an existing employee from a foreign branch to a branch in South Africa. These employees must apply for intra-company transfer work visa. In such cases, no proof of steps taken to obtain the services of a South African citizen/permanent residence will be required.

A corporate visa allows a corporate entity (e.g. a mine group, farmer, etc) to employ a pre-determined number of skilled/semi-skilled/ unskilled workers. A corporate visa is issued for a period not exceeding three years, Applications must be made at any VFS centres or nearest South African embassy, mission or consulate abroad.

- Companies and Intellectual Properties Commission, where legally required
- The applicant for a corporate visa must provide proof that at least 60% of the total staff complement that are employed are citizens and permanent residents employed permanently in various positions.
- Provide a job description and remuneration for each foreign worker
- An undertaking to ensure that:
- the foreigner workers have valid passports the foreign workers will be employed only in the specific positions for which the visa are issued the foreign workers will leave South Africa on completion of their duties
- A cash deposit or guarantee for the foreign workers may be payable by the corporate entity or by the workers in the case of skilled workers
Upon receipt of the approved number of workers, the DHA will issue the corporate visa and authorization certificates for each worker in terms of regulation 18(2)(b), then the corporate entity can start recruiting workers. Once a corporate visa has been issued to the applicant (entity), the applicant may then proceed to recruit workers, the workers will then apply for Corporate worker certificates and these certificates are issued in line with the Corporate visa for 3 years, but may not exceed the validity period of the corporate visa.

If you are a foreign student and wish to study in South Africa you can apply for a study visa by completing Form BI-1738. Study visas must be applied for at VFS Centre across the country near the educational institution you will be studying at or at the nearest South African embassy, mission or consulate abroad. Study visas for studies at a learning institution shall be issued other than a school shall be issued for the duration of course registered for. Study visas for learning institutions defined as a school shall be valid for the duration of the study: provided the duration shall not exceed eight years at a primary school and 6 years at a secondary school.

- An official letter from the educational institution, where you intend to study, confirming provisional acceptance and the duration of the course.
- Proof of medical cover renewed annually for the period of study with a medical scheme registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act.

The holder of a study visa may conduct part-time work for a period not exceeding 20 hours per week.

Retired persons’ permits may be issued to persons who wish to retire in South Africa, provided that such persons comply with the financial requirements provided for in the Immigration Act, 2002 (Act No. 13 of 2002) and its Regulations. Applications must be made at any regional office of the Department of Home Affairs or nearest South African embassy, mission or consulate abroad.

A relative’s visa may be issued for the prescribed period by the Director-General to a foreigner who is a member of the immediate family of a citizen or a permanent resident, provided that such citizen or permanent resident provides the prescribed financial assurance. - A cash deposit equivalent value to a return or onward ticket (not required for the spouse or dependent children of South African citizen/permanent resident).
- A statement and/or documentation confirming the purpose and duration of your visit and proof that you are an immediate family member of a South African citizen/permanent resident (a full birth certificate for children, a marriage certificate in the case of a spouse and proof of kinship for others)
- A police clearance certificate from each country in which you resided for 12 months or longer since the age of 18 years
- Medical and radiology reports for yourself and all family members accompanying you (pregnant women and children younger than 12 years need not submit these reports)
- Proof of South African citizenship or permanent residence of the relative in South Africa in the form of an identity document or passport
- Proof availability of a minimum amount of R8500 per month per person for living expenses (this does not apply for a spouse or dependent minor child of a South African citizen/ permanent resident)

- The person concerned shall be photographed without any head-gear or veil, and any other additions to the face which tend to alter the natural likeness shall be removed. (The Director-General may exempt any person or any category of persons from any of these requirements.)
- Spectacles may be worn provided that the lenses do not make the eyes invisible. Spectacles with dark lenses may be worn if the eyes will appear distorted without them or if the person is blind

Exchange Visa

Overview
Exchange Visas may be issued to foreigners who are not older than 25 years of age and wish to participate in cultural, economic or social exchange programmes administered by an organ of the State or a public higher educational institution in conjunction with an organ of a foreign state. Applications must be made at any regional office of the Department of Home Affairs or nearest South African embassy, mission or consulate abroad.
The validity period of an exchange permit depends on the length of the programme for which it is issued and usually does not exceed 12 months. Exchange permits cannot be renewed or extended.
Should you successfully apply for an exchange permit, you will not qualify for a temporary residence permit until you have lived outside the Republic of South Africa for at least 12 months.
If you require an exchange visas in order to take part in a programme administered or organized by a learning institution in South Africa in conjunction with a learning institution/organ of a foreign state (Section 22(a) of the Immigration Act, 2002 (Act No. 13 of 2002)),

To apply for an exchange visa issued according to Section 22(b) of the Immigration Act, 2002 (Act No. 13 of 2002) you must submit the following documentation at the nearest South African embassy, mission or consulate in your country of origin:

- the position for which the exchange permit will be issued exists
- that your remuneration complies with labour requirements

- the employer will inform the Department if you do not comply with the terms and conditions of your permit or leave the Republic
- you will leave the country when your permit expires.
You will not qualify for a permanent residence permit within 2 years after the expiry of your exchange permit.
