Short Term Visa
In South Africa, visas for tourism and for visiting family and friends are issued for a maximum of three months. Short term visit visas do not allow the applicant to switch into a longer term South African immigration service.
Transit Visa

Overview
The Minister of Home Affairs has exempted travellers transiting through the following international airports from transit visas:
- O R Tambo International
- Cape Town International
- King Shaka
- Lanseria
Travellers transiting these airports must be subjected to biometric capturing.
Deportees transiting must be in possession of transit visas and at all times be escorted, failing which, they must be returned to the airline that conveyed them for removal form the Republic.
Travellers utilizing land ports of entry to transit through South Africa should apply for Port of Entry Visas.

Photo Specifications
Applicants are requested to submit their Application form with the new photo format, as explained below.
Photograph quality
The photographs must be:
- two identical colour photos for passports, not more than one month old, 35mm in width and 45 mm in height
- a close up of your head and top of your shoulder so that your face takes up to 70-80 percent of the photograph
- of high quality with no ink marks or creases and not damaged
The photogarphs must:
- show you looking directly at the camera, have appropriate brightness and contrast and be printed on high quality photo paper
Style and lighting
The photographs must:
- show your natural colour, show your eyes open and clearly visible – no hair across face
- show you facing square onto the camera, not looking over one shoulder (portrait style) or tilted.
- show both edges of your face clearly, be taken with a light grey or plain cream - coloured background
- be taken with uniform lighting and not show shadows or flash reflections on your face and no red-eye
- show you alone (no chair backs toys or other people visible)
Glasses and head covers
If you wear glasses:
- the photograph must show your eyes clearly with no flash reflection off the glasses, no dark-tinted lenses or heavy frames, make sure that the frame do not cover any part of your eyes
Head coverings:
- are not permitted except for religious reasons, but your facial features from of chin to top of forehead and both edges of your face must be clearly shown
Expression
The photograph must:
- show you looking at the camera with a neutral expression and mouth closed
- no obvious grinning, frowning or raised eyebrow

The timelines given by South African High Commission in Nigeria for the processing of each application is a minimum of 15 working days. However visa applicants should bear in mind that each application is subject to an individual assessment and processing time may vary.
Applicants need to bring their original receipt that was issued to them at the time of submission of visa application.
