Transit
Overview
An airport transit visa is required for nationals of certain states to go through the international transit area of airports, without actually entering the national territory of the country concerned, during a stop-over or transfer between two stages of an international flight.
In other words an Airport Transit Visa is required when you are required to connect through an airport in one of the Schengen countries without actually leaving the transit are of the airport. [I.e. you arrive from a non-Schengen country and depart to a non-Schengen country]
IMPORTANT
Applications can be lodged earliest six (6) months before the planned trip.
Visas are not issued on the day of the application and may take up to 4 weeks, notably when further scrutiny of the application is needed or in cases of representation where the authorities of the represented Member State are consulted. Exceptionally, when additional documentation is needed in specific cases, the period for the decision may be extended up to a maximum of 60 calendar days.
Holders of Schengen visas are still subject to immigration control at the point of entry and are not guaranteed entry into any of the Schengen countries.
