Tourism encompasses the undertaking of activities of a touristic, informational, cultural, or recreational nature, as well as family visits, provided that the visa holder does not engage in remunerated activity from a Brazilian source and that the activity performed does not exceed a period of ninety (90) days.

VITEM XI - Declaration for Family Reunion Purposes

Overview

Business encompasses participation in meetings, trade fairs, and business events; prospecting of commercial opportunities; signing of contracts; and performance of audit or consultancy activities, as well as provision of technical assistance services or transfer of technology under a contract, cooperation agreement, or arrangement between a foreign and a Brazilian legal entity provided that the visa holder is not remunerated by any Brazilian entity and that the activity performed does not exceed a period of ninety (90) days. The visa may be granted if the foreign national receives payment from the government, a Brazilian employer, or a private entity in the form of per diem, allowance, fee, pro labore, or other reimbursements related to travel expenses.

Following the publication of Decree No. 12,657 of October 7, 2025, please note the following change in visa procedures:

The decree updates Article 29 of Decree No. 9,199, expanding the situations in which a Visitor Visa (VIVIS) may be granted. It now allows the issuance of a VIVIS for the provision of technical assistance services or transfer of technology under a contract, cooperation agreement, or arrangement between a foreign and a Brazilian legal entity, provided that the maximum intended stay does not exceed 90 days.

This change does not modify Normative Resolution No. 03/2017. Therefore, for stays that do not exceed 90 days, the sponsoring company may choose either to apply for a prior residence authorization for the purpose of obtaining a Temporary Visa (VITEM V), or alternatively, to apply directly for a Visitor Visa (VIVIS) at the Visa Center.

For stays exceeding 90 days, the application for a Temporary Visa remains mandatory.

Overview

Artistic or sports activities are aimed at those travelling to Brazil for maximum stays of up to 90 days, without the intention to establish residence, for the purposes of engaging in artistic or sports activities such as taking part in artistic or sports competitions, undertaking sports training, participating in rehearsals, exhibitions, shows, artistic presentations, festivals, among other related activities. Technicians and other professionals supporting the artist or athlete are included in this category.

• Please note: the former Artists and Sportspersons Visa (VITEM III) has been discontinued and substituted by: VIVIS, if the maximum stay does not exceed 90 days; and
• Temporary Visa – VITEM XII (based on Normative Resolution No. 16), for stays of over 90 days.

Overview

The decree updates Article 29 of Decree No. 9,199, expanding the situations in which a Visitor Visa (VIVIS) may be granted. It now allows the issuance of a VIVIS for the provision of technical assistance services or transfer of technology under a contract, cooperation agreement, or memorandum of understanding between a foreign and a Brazilian legal entity.

Travelers going to Brazil for these activities should apply for a Visitor Visa (VIVIS), which replaces the previous use of the Temporary Visa (VITEM V) for such purposes.

Overview

• for a foreign national holding a protocol of application for registration, extension of stay, or residence authorization in Brazil;
• for a national of another country aged sixty (60) years or older, or a person with special needs, holder of a permanent residence permit, whose National Migration Registration Card (CRNM) has expired;

Brazilian legislation requires all foreign residents to keep their migratory status up to date and to renew their registration within the legally established deadlines. Holders of a permanent residence permit whose National Migration Registration Card (CRNM) has expired are, therefore, expected to apply for a new residence visa (VITEM) to regularize their situation. Exceptionally, the law allows foreign nationals aged sixty (60) years or older, or persons with disabilities (PCD), who hold a permanent residence permit and whose CRNM has expired, to apply for a visitor visa (VIVIS) to return to Brazil, provided they have not remained outside Brazilian territory for more than two consecutive years.

It is also possible for foreign nationals holding a valid RNE or CRNM whose document was lost, stolen, destroyed, or misplaced to request a visitor's visa (VIVIS) for the purpose of regularizing their situation without having to reapply for a residence visa. In addition, a visitor visa may be issued to foreign nationals who hold a protocol of application for registration, extension of stay, or residence authorization in Brazil, upon presentation of the protocol issued by the competent authority.

In both cases, the visitor visa may be issued only to those who in fact reside in Brazil and intend to return to continue residing there. The visa will be issued for single entry and valid for 90 days.

Overview

Work Visas are subject to prior approval by the Brazilian Ministry of Justice and Public Security. The process must be initiated in Brazil, by the sponsoring company (on behalf of the applicant), with submission of the pertinent application and supporting documentation to that Ministry.

Once the procedure in Brazil is concluded and approved, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security will transmit the authorisation to the Consulate via the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Only after the authorisation is received by the Consulate will the applicant be able to proceed and lodge the visa application itself with the Consulate by submitting the documentation listed below.

Foreign nationals who are already in Brazil can apply for residence permit for the purposes of work directly with the Brazilian Ministry of Justice and Public Security.

Overview

Family reunion visas may be granted to legal dependents of a Brazilian national or of a foreign citizen holding temporary or permanent Brazilian visas as follows:

• Descendants under 18 years old, or at any age in case the financial dependency and the need of support is formally proved;
• Ascendants or descendants, in case the financial dependency and need of support is formally proved;
• Orphan, single and under 18 years old, or at any age, who is the sibling, grandchild or great-grandchild of the Brazilian national or of the foreign citizen holding temporary or permanent visa in case the financial dependency and need of support is formally proved;
• Spouse or partner in a stable relationship, regardless of gender, of a foreigner temporarily residing in Brazil;
• Dependents listed in sections I and III in case they are enrolled in undergraduate or graduate courses until the calendar year in which they reach 24 years, provided the Brazilian citizens are given equal treatment in the country of origin of the foreigner;

The above types of family reunion visas may be issued to dependents of Brazilian citizens or of foreigners in Brazil bearing temporary or permanent visas: permanent visas (VIPER), temporary visas (VITEM I, II, III, IV, V, VI and VII), temporary holiday visa and tourism (VTFT), temporary residence visa (Viret) or temporary visa for medical improvement (VICAM).

This type of visa requires starting the process in Brazil. The Brazilian company or institution must file a petition for temporary residency authorization at the Ministry of Justice and only after the authorization is granted, the applicant will be able to submit the application.

VITEM XI - Declaration for Family Reunion Purposes

Overview

VITEM I should be requested by researchers, scientists and visiting professors – with no employment relationship with a Brazilian institution – for the purposes of academic research, scientific cooperation, academic extension programs, and teaching, as long as the stay is set to last longer than 90 days. If the stay does not exceed 90 days, only a Visitor Visa (VIVIS) is needed.

For researchers, scientists and visiting professors – with employment relationship with a Brazilian institution – the process must be initiated in Brazil, by the sponsoring institution (on behalf of the applicant), with submission of the pertinent application and supporting documentation to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security. Once the procedure in Brazil is concluded and approved, the authorization will be transmitted to the Embassy/Consulate via the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Only then will the applicant be able to proceed and lodge the visa application itself.

Please note: a VITEM I does not apply to study / research exchange purposes (except postdoctoral degree studies, which does require VITEM I). For activities involving academic qualification such as participation in "sandwich" and university collaboration programs, carrying out part of one’s master's / doctor's degree research, doing one's compulsory undergraduate / postgraduate study module abroad (commonly referred to as "year abroad"), one must obtain a Student Visa (VITEM IV) instead.

Researchers:

VITEM I for the purpose of research may be granted to a researcher or scientist fulfilling the following conditions:

• I - when receiving a scholarship granted by foundations supporting public or private higher education and scientific and technological research institutions, for conducting research at a Brazilian public or private higher education institution recognized by the Ministry of Education or by other national technical and scientific institutions recognized by the Ministry of Science and Technology
• II - when receiving a scholarship funded by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), the Financier of Studies and Projects (FINEP), and other public research support foundations;
• III – when travelling as a scientist, researcher, or professional who comes to Brazil under an international agreement, as recognized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
• IV – when travelling to participate in research projects established between foreign institutions or research and development centers of foreign companies with:
  1. a national company;
  2. a national company incubator;
  3. Scientific, Technological, and Innovation Institution (ICT);
  4. Technological Innovation Center (NIT);
  5. support foundation;
  6. technology park;
  7. technology hub; and
  8. public and private educational and research institutions.
• V – when conducting, as a scientist, researcher, or professional, research not regulated by Decree No. 98,830 of 1990;
• VI – when participating of a postdoctoral program.
• If the applicant will not be receiving any honorarium for his/her presentation, and stay no more than 90 days, he/she will be eligible for a VIVIS VII (Study, internship, research or scientific cooperation).

Teaching and academic extension

VITEM I for the purposes of teaching and academic extension may be granted to foreigners under the following conditions:

• I - professor, without an employment relationship with a Brazilian institution, when supported by an institution in their country of origin or origin, under an inter-institutional agreement or similar instruments between the interested Brazilian higher education institution and the foreign higher education or research institution; and
• II - a recipient of a scholarship granted by a Brazilian higher education institution, public or private, recognized by the Ministry of Education;
• VITEM I for the purposes of teaching and academic extension with an employment relationship with a Brazilian institution require an authorization from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security. Only then will the Embassy / Consulate be authorized to issue the visa.

Note: Please be advised that all VITEM V requests must be submitted to the Coordination General of Labor Immigration of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security in Brazil by the sponsoring institution before the application is submitted to the Embassy or Consulate.

Once the request is approved by the Coordination General of Labor Immigration of the Ministry and Justice and Public Security in Brazil, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will communicate said approval to the specified Consulate which may issue the visa.

The temporary visa for work in Brazil includes persons hired by a Brazilian company or individual, technical jobs and/or training performed at an affiliate company in Brazil, franchise operation activities, evaluation and/or repair of equipment installed in Brazil or sold to a Brazilian client, etc. Whether or not you will be compensated by a Brazilian party is not necessarily a decisive factor. VITEM XI - Declaration for Family Reunion Purposes

Overview

Family reunification visa allows family members of Brazilian nationals or family members of foreign nationals to reside in Brazil.

Applicants eligible for a Family Reunification Visa include:

1. Spouse or partner in accordance with Brazilian law.
2. Child of a Brazilian or an immigrant with a residence permit.
3. Stepchild of a Brazilian or an immigrant with a residence permit provided that they are under eighteen, until the age of twenty-four if they are a student, or of any age if they are dependent on the sponsor.
4. Parent of an immigrant with a residence permit.
5. Ascendant up to the second degree of a Brazilian or an immigrant with a residence permit.
6. Descendant up to the second degree of a Brazilian or an immigrant with a residence permit.
7. Sibling of a Brazilian or an immigrant with a residence permit, provided that they are under the age of eighteen, or up to the age of twenty-four if they are a student, or of any age if they are dependent on the sponsor.
8. Guardian, curator, or legal guardian of a Brazilian citizen.

Notes:

Parent of a Brazilian citizen: the visa can only be issued if the parent will reside with the child at the same address in Brazil.

A Family Reunification Visa cannot be granted if the sponsor is in Brazil on a Family Reunification Visa or if the marriage was performed by proxy.

Overview

This type of visa is required for athletes, artists, fashion models or entertainers, as well as their supporting technical staff, who wish to perform in Brazil.

This visa request is submitted to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security in Brazil by the sponsoring institution or company in Brazil. Once the request is approved, the Ministry of External Relations will send the approval to the Embassy or Consulate.

Qualified applicants include:

1. Professional artists;
2. Musicians;
3. Sportspeople;
4. Fashion models;
5. All accompanying technicians/assistants.
