Overview
- If you are planning a short visit to Germany, you may need to apply for a Schengen visa. Germany is one of the 26 European countries forming the Schengen Area which have no border controls between them. These countries also issue a common visa, the Schengen visa for stays up to 90 days.
- Before scheduling an appointment, please make sure that you choose the Mission competent for your place of residence. Failure to do so will lead to your appointment being cancelled and your application not being accepted. Every mission reserves the right to ask for additional documents for proof of your habitual place of residence at the counter.
- All Schengen visa applications accepted for Germany across all Visa Application Centres in India will be forwarded to the German Consulate in Mumbai for a decision.

Long Term Visa
Important Information for Master, doctoral and post-doctorate Students, scholarship holders and certain Bachelor students with a Test AS- certificate of 100 or more points!
Certain applicants can now submit their application for a German National Visa directly at the Service Provider VFS Global, thus skipping the wait time for an interview appointment at the German Mission.
If you hail from the jurisdiction of the German Consulate in Chennai and you want to pursue doctoral, post-doctorate or Master studies and have a binding, unconditional admission letter from a German University or have been awarded a full scholarship by an official German Institution for higher studies in Germany or have a Test AS result of 100 or more points.
- Students who are recipients of a full scholarship paid by an official German academic institution
- Doctorate and Post-Doctorate Students holding a binding and unconditional admission letter (“unbeschränkte Zulassung”) from a German University
- Master students holding a binding and unconditional admission letter (“unbeschränkte Zulassung”) from a German university: If the admission letter reads “to submit some papers e.g. final BA proof, passport picture” or to collect some missing ETCS points or prove a A1 or A2 German level before you can register for your thesis or until end of second semester. This will not be seen as conditional.
On the other hand if your letter mentions that you need to pass any exam or need to show some language proficiency before enrolment, this will be considered as Conditional admission. - Students (including Bachelor), presenting a Test AS-certificate with a result equal or higher to 100 points in the core test (“Kerntest”)
- Students applying for a Bachelor course in Germany with a school leaving result of 90 % or better.
- Bachelor student holding unconditional admission letter with 90% in HSC
- Bachelor student holding conditional admission letter with 90% in HSC and condition in the admission letter says no language proficiency to be shown or no need to pass any exam
If you do not meet the above criteria, for example if you want to pursue Bachelor studies, or are applying for preparatory classes (also language classes) with the intent of entering a German University later, you have to submit your application directly at the competent German Mission. Please note that any applicant who does not meet the above mentioned criteria and schedules an appointment at one of the mentioned Application Centres will not be attended, losing valuable time and means

Visa fees for a post-graduate, post-doctorate, Master Student is INR 7000/- for child between age 0 to 17 years the Visa fees is INR 3500/- and the logistic charges are INR 943/-The above New Visa and Logistic Fee is effective from – 26th September 2024 for applications under the Chennai Consulate jurisdiction.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR EMPLOYMENT VISA CATEGORY!
Applicants from the jurisdiction of the German Consulate General in Chennai who wish to travel to Germany for the purpose of highly qualified employment can submit their visa applications at the VFS Global application centers in Chennai and Hyderabad.
It is mandatory to have a binding contract for a highly qualified employment in Germany. In some cases a binding approval letter issued by the competent German Labour Authorities (“ZAV-Zustimmung”) is required in addition.
Spouses and children of the main applicant can apply in VFS centers if applying together along with main applicant. Spouses and children of the main applicant can apply up to 6 months from the date of visa submission of main applicant in VFS or at the Consulate.

Customers who do not show up for their appointment at the VFS - Visa Application Centre, Chennai or Hyderabad or the VFS center on the date of appointment or cancel their appointments will need to re-register for an appointment and will be realigned as per the waitlist queue at the time.

Please note, National visa appointments are limited and if an appointment for a national visa is not available, you will have the possibility to register on a waiting list for the respective category. The appointments, once released, will then be allocated in the sequence of requests received on the waiting list.

D Visa Stamping Cases (Post Approval) – Customers who wish to submit their D Visa Stamping cases at the VFS application center in Chennai will need to take an appointment. Customers can also avail our Application Pick up and Drop service for submitting your Post Approval – D Visa stamping applications. VFS will have your application picked up from your home or office. EU Regulation
- Application can be submitted only six (6) months prior to the date of departure.
- From May 1, 2010 only passports issued within the previous ten (10) years will be accepted.
- Passport must have at least two blank pages.
- Passport should be valid for at least three (3) months longer than the intended stay.
- Handwritten passports are not accepted.

Business visa application is applicable in case you are travelling for business purposes. This visa is given for travel period up to 90 days.

For your kind information, as per the instruction received from the German Consulate as on 21 February 2014 Original invitation letter from the inviting company is no longer mandatory. A scan ned copy of invitation letters either in German or English language will be sufficient at the time of submission of business visa application.

Due to increased capacities, we are open for a limited amount of business visa at the VFS VACs in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kochi and Kolkata.
With regard to the ongoing travel restrictions to Germany, appointments can only be granted if the travel purpose meets the current exemptions from the travel ban.

Processing Time

Visa applicants are hereby informed that duly completed applications may be submitted three months onward prior to the confirmed travel date. As applications peak during the months of April through July, it is advisable to apply well in advance. This will help towards the smooth organization of your trip to Germany/ Schengen Countries.
As per the Visa Code of the Schengen member states under Article 23:
Decision on the application
- Applications shall be decided on within 15 calendar days of the date of the lodging of an application which is admissible in accordance with Article 19.
- That period may be extended up to a maximum of 30 calendar days in individual cases, notably when further scrutiny of the application is needed or in cases of representation where the authorities of the represented Member State are consulted.
- Exceptionally, when additional documentation is needed in specific cases, the period may be extended up to a maximum of 80 calendar days.

Unless the application has been withdrawn, a decision shall be taken to:
- issue a uniform visa in accordance with Article 24;
- issue a visa with limited territorial validity in accordance with Article 25;
- refuse a visa in accordance with Article 32; or
- discontinue the examination of the application and transfer it to the relevant authorities of the represented Member State in accordance with Article 8(2).
The fact that fingerprinting is physically impossible, in accordance with Article 13(7)(b), shall not influence the issuing or refusal of a visa.

Schengen visa have to be obtained from the embassy or consulate of the country where the main purpose of travel lies. Therefore, please check your travel plans before making your application to the German Consulate. In case of travel to multiple Schengen countries, please make your application to the embassy or the consulate where you will be staying for the maximum number of days, or from the point of first entry into the Schengen countries, if the duration of stay is the same in more than one Schengen country.

If you would like to participate in a fair in Germany as an exhibitor and if you are residing in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu or Pondicherry, you have to submit your visa application to the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Chennai.
