Short Term Visa

Overview
- If you are planning a short visit to Germany, you may need to apply for a Schengen visa. Germany is one of the 29 European countries forming the Schengen Area which have no border controls between them. These countries also issue a common visa, the Schengen visa for stays up to 90 days.
- Before scheduling an appointment, please make sure that you choose the Mission competent for your place of residence. Failure to do so will lead to your appointment being cancelled and your application not being accepted. Every mission reserves the right to ask for additional documents for proof of your habitual place of residence at the counter.
- All Schengen visa applications accepted for Germany across all Visa Application Centers in India will be forwarded to the German Consulate in Mumbai for a decision.

Attention! This page contains information for the jurisdiction area of the Consulate General in Chennai only. The jurisdiction of the German Consulate General Chennai includes Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Pondicherry for last 6 months.
Please note that VFS is only the external service provider authorized to accept appointment requests and National visa applications on behalf of the German missions in India. Who is eligible to apply for a German National Visa at the German Consulate General in Chennai or VFS Chennai and Hyderabad?
All customers residing within the jurisdiction of the German Consulate General Chennai must submit their National Visa applications depending on the relevant category either at the German Consulate General Chennai directly or via VFS. The consular jurisdiction includes all residents in: Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Pondicherry.

Photo Specifications
Two recent passport size photos for each person included in the application with 35x45 MM white background for Schengen Visa as well as for National Visa and face coverage up to 70 - 80% and photo not to be older then 6 months.

Processing Time
After submittal, the visa section will check your application, inform you about missing documents and – if necessary – starts the internal procedure to obtain the necessary approvals of the authorities in Germany (Immigration Office (“Ausländerbehörde”) or Federal Employment Agency (“Bundesagentur für Arbeit”)). Different processing times may apply as the visa section does not have any influence on the individual processing times there.
You may find an overview of the general processing times of the different National visa categories on the website of the German consulate. Please note that during these processing times, the visa section will not be able to answer individual inquiries.
If your application was not complete at the time of submission, the visa section will contact you in order to submit further documents. Please note that the standard processing time only starts once your application is complete!
As one of the last steps of the visa process, you will receive a notification by the Consulate via e-mail to submit your passport and in some cases other further documents.
In that case, you may submit your passport along with the E-mail notification and the additional requested documents at the VFS Chennai and Hyderabad Centre. Applicants can visit the center anytime during working hours for submitting their passports at the VFS centers or customers can also avail our Application Pick up and Drop service for submitting your Post Approval – D Visa stamping applications. VFS will have your application picked up from your home or office. The charges for this service are INR 1,100/-. You can email us on [email protected] for more information about this service.

General Information
Appointment booking:
Please always make sure to book your appointment in the correct category. The visa section will not be able to guide you individually through the booking procedure.
If you chose the wrong category, the visa section and VFS will not be able to honor your appointment. Furthermore, it is crucial to be on time for your appointment.
If you do not need your appointment anymore, kindly make sure to cancel the same. You are unnecessarily blocking a slot for another applicant otherwise!

Customers who are submitting their visa applications at the German Consulate General in Chennai are requested to complete their courier assurance booking formalities by paying a fee of INR 347/- before their interview date in order to facilitate easy return of their applications post a decision has been made. This will also help reduce the time taken for processing as your passport will be retained by the Consulate and returned to you by courier immediately once a decision on your visa application has been made. Please note that this service is not mandatory but offers you the mentioned advantages.

Travel insurance and passport submission:
In order for the visa section to process your application quickly, kindly provide also a valid health insurance starting from your tentative travel date at the time of submission of your application at the counter.
Attention: the visa section will issue the visa according to the tentative travel date mentioned in your VIDEX application form if it is covered by the health insurance. If the health insurance starts at a later date, the visa cannot be issued for an earlier date!
To further facilitate and accelerate the visa process, customers applying via VFS. may also submit their passport together with the application and pre-book the courier service directly.
Family reunion:
Please note, customers who are applying for family reunion visa need to check the below given link to ensure they book the correct appointment for their submission depending on their family reunion visa category as certain categories of family reunion visas can be submitted at the VFS application centre in Chennai.

The family reunion category that needs to be chosen depends on the residence permit or visa of the working / studying spouse. Therefore, please check your partner’s residence permit or visa carefully in order to pick the correct visa category for yourself.
Students:
Starting from November 2022, the APS (“akademische Prüfstelle”) has been introduced in India. The APS certificate has since become mandatory for most of student applicants with Indian degrees. EU Regulation
- Application can be submitted only six (6) months prior to the date of departure.
- From May 1, 2010 only passports issued within the previous ten (10) years will be accepted.
- Passport must have at least two blank pages.
- Passport should be valid for at least three (3) months longer than the intended stay.
- Handwritten passports are not accepted.
Business

Overview
Business visa application is applicable in case you are travelling for business purposes. This visa is given for travel period up to 90 days.
Dear Applicant / Travel Agent/ Representative:
For your kind information, as per the instruction received from the German Consulate as on 21 February 2014 Original invitation letter from the inviting company is no longer mandatory. A scan ned copy of invitation letters either in German or English language will be sufficient at the time of submission of business visa application.
Business visa application is applicable in case you are traveling for business purposes. This visa is given for travel period up to 90 days

Due to increased capacities, we are open for a limited amount of business visa at the VFS VACs in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kochi and Kolkata.
With regard to the ongoing travel restrictions to Germany, appointments can only be granted if the travel purpose meets the current exemptions from the travel ban.
To pre-check your inquiry and obtain an appointment, please submit to VFS via e-mail the following documents:

As applications peak during the months of April through July, it is advisable to apply well in advance. This will help towards the smooth organization of your trip to Germany/ Schengen Countries.
As per the Visa Code of the Schengen member states under Article 23:
Decision on the application
- Applications shall be decided on within 15 calendar days of the date of the lodging of an application which is admissible in accordance with Article 19.
- That period may be extended up to a maximum of 30 calendar days in individual cases, notably when further scrutiny of the application is needed or in cases of representation where the authorities of the represented Member State are consulted.
- Exceptionally, when additional documentation is needed in specific cases, the period may be extended up to a maximum of 80 calendar days.

Unless the application has been withdrawn, a decision shall be taken to:
- issue a uniform visa in accordance with Article 24;
- issue a visa with limited territorial validity in accordance with Article 25;
- refuse a visa in accordance with Article 32; or
- discontinue the examination of the application and transfer it to the relevant authorities of the represented Member State in accordance with Article 8(2).
The fact that fingerprinting is physically impossible, in accordance with Article 13(7)(b), shall not influence the issuing or refusal of a visa.

Schengen Visa
Schengen visa have to be obtained from the embassy or consulate of the country where the main purpose of travel lies. Therefore, please check your travel plans before making your application to the German Consulate. In case of travel to multiple Schengen countries, please make your application to the embassy or the consulate where you will be staying for the maximum number of days, or from the point of first entry into the Schengen countries, if the duration of stay is the same in more than one Schengen country.

Overview
If you would like to participate in a fair in Germany as an exhibitor and if you are residing in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu or Pondicherry, you have to submit your visa application to the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Chennai. Please note that the place of issue of your passport is of no relevance in this regard.
