Overview

• If you are planning a short visit to Germany, you may need to apply for a Schengen visa. Germany is one of the 26 European countries forming the Schengen Area which have no border controls between them. These countries also issue a common visa, the Schengen visa for stays up to 90 days.
• Before scheduling an appointment, please make sure that you choose the Mission competent for your place of residence. Failure to do so will lead to your appointment being cancelled and your application not being accepted. Every mission reserves the right to ask for additional documents for proof of your habitual place of residence at the counter.
• All Schengen visa applications accepted for Germany across all Visa Application Centres in India will be forwarded to the German Consulate in Mumbai for a decision.

Visa Fees

The New Visa Fees is effective from 24th Feb 2023 for all cities.

• The applicable visa fee in Indian Rupees is as per the exchange rate of the German Consulate General, Mumbai.
• Visa fee, VFS service charge and value-added service fee are applicable per customer.
• Visa Fees, service charge and value-added service fees, once paid are non - refundable.

• Is it mandatory for me to appear for the interview if I am applying for a short term visa?

  It is not mandatory to appear for the interview for short term visa but Embassy may ask to appear for interview, if required.

• How can I apply for the long term visa?

  The application for the long term visa is submitted directly at the German Embassy; however the appointment is given by VFS Helpline.

• I have a valid visa on the old passport, can I travel to Germany?

  You will have to get the visa transferred on the new passport by going to the German Embassy directly with the travel Insurance and the Travel Itinerary.

• My spouse is anEU National. Do I need a visa?

  Yes, you need a visa to travel to Germany, however you will not be charged the visa fee.

• I am a US passport holder, do I need a German Visa?

  The passport holders of USA, Canada, and all EU-States do not need a visa to travel to Germany. 

• What is the visa processing time?

  It takes about 10 -15working days after the submission . 

• I am studying in Pune from last 2 years but have a Delhi issued passport, can I apply from Delhi?

  No, you will have to check with the German Consulate in Mumbai.  

• Do I have to come personally or can I courier that application to the Germany Visa Application Centre?

  The Embassy of The Federal Republic of Germany has implemented a change in arrangement for the collection of passport(s) from VFS Visa Application Centre. With effect from 16 July 2014, third party collection of the documents or passports will not be permitted, except in the following cases:

  • Immediate Family Member ( i.e. Parents, Children, Siblings)
  • One member of a group collecting for the entire group
  • A person collecting on behalf of Govt. officials if authorized on the Govt. letter head or department

  • Representative of a company - Authorization letter on the letter head of the company and the official ID card

    If any of the above comes for passport collection they need to carry the following documents 

    • Photocopy of Govt. ID card
    • Original ICR
    • Authorization Letter from applicant
    Applicants who do not wish to collect their documents in person and whose documents cannot be collected by one of the above should select delivery mode as courier at the time of submission. 
    
    The applicants are requested to mention the complete delivery address on the covering letter. In case no specific address is mentioned on the covering letter, the passport will be sent to the address mentioned on the Visa Application Form. 
    
    This procedural change is to ensure the safe and secure return of documents to applicants.

Processing Time

As per Visa Code of the Schengen member states under Article 23:

1. Applications shall be decided on within 4 Weeks of the date of the lodging of an application (Article19).
2. That period may be extended up to a maximum of 30 calendar days in individual cases, notably when further scrutiny of the application is needed or in cases of representation where the authorities of the represented Member State are consulted.
3. In case when additional documentation is needed in specific cases, the period may be extended up to a maximum of 80 calendar days.

Schengen Visa

Schengen visa have to be obtained from the embassy or consulate of the country where the main purpose of travel lies. Therefore, please check your travel plans before making your application to the German Embassy. In case of travel to multiple Schengen countries, please make your application to the embassy or the consulate where you will be staying for the maximum number of days, or from the point of first entry into the Schengen countries, if the duration of stay is the same in more than one Schengen country.

• Is it mandatory for me to appear for the interview if I am applying for a short term visa?

  It is not mandatory to appear for the interview for short term visa but Embassy may ask to appear for interview, if required.

• How can I apply for the long term visa?

  The application for the long term visa is submitted directly at the German Embassy; however the appointment is given by VFS Helpline.

• I have a valid visa on the old passport, can I travel to Germany?

  You will have to get the visa transferred on the new passport by going to the German Embassy directly with the travel Insurance and the Travel Itinerary.

• My spouse is an EU National. Do I need a visa?

  Yes, you need a visa to travel to Germany, however you will not be charged the visa fee.

• I am a US passport holder, do I need a German Visa?

  The passport holders of USA, Canada, and all EU-States do not need a visa to travel to Germany. 

• What is the visa processing time?

  It takes about 10 -15working days after the submission . 

• I am studying in Pune from last 2 years but have a Delhi issued passport, can I apply from Delhi?

  No, you will have to check with the German Consulate in Mumbai.  

• Do I have to come personally or can I courier that application to the Germany Visa Application Centre?

  You can send a Friend/Relative/Representative or a Travel Agent to submit your Visa application. A letter of authorization Annexure -A by you and ID proof will be required to allow your Friend/Relative/Representative or a Travel Agent to submit on your behalf.
  Passport can be collected by immediate family members only i.e. parents, children, and sibling.
  Applicants who do not wish to collect passport in person or by family member should select delivery mode as courier. For more details please refer NEWS AND NOTICES.

• If I am submitting more than 1 application, can I make a combined Demand Draft for the visa fee?

  No, every application should have a separate demand draft.

• Whom should the Bank Draft favor?

Processing Time

As per Visa Code of the Schengen member states under Article 23:

1. Applications shall be decided on within 4 Weeks of the date of the lodging of an application (Article19).
2. That period may be extended up to a maximum of 30 calendar days in individual cases, notably when further scrutiny of the application is needed or in cases of representation where the authorities of the represented Member State are consulted.
3. In case when additional documentation is needed in specific cases, the period may be extended up to a maximum of 80 calendar days.

Overview

Applicants for a seaman’s visa must be employed in any capacity on board a vessel, and seeking to enter Germany solely in pursuit of his/her calling as a seaman, with the intention of departing with the vessel or reshipping on other vessel that is bound for a foreign port or place or one coming to the Germany to join a vessel in this country.

National Visa 

Applicants will have to appear for a personal interview directly at the German Embassy with all necessary documents. 

*National Visa include the following categories where the duration of stay in Germany is more than 90 days - Work Permit, Student, German Classes, Family Reunion, Au Pair, Specialty Cook, Medical Treatment, Guest Scientist and Visiting Scholars.
