Family Reunion

Family reunion visas are visas intended to reunite family members specifically husbands/wives, children and parents economically dependent on the sponsors. It is a long term (type D) period visa. The Family reunion visas must be authorized through the specified authorisation ("NULLA OSTA") issued by the competent Italian Authorisation in which are listed the family members who may apply for the visa.

Please note: the family members have to provide documentary evidence about the family ties which will be formally and substantially verified by the Embassy of Italy in Nairobi.

Please note that effective from 19, January 2012 all Somali applicants applying for Family Reunion will be required to pay an additional amount of Kshs 1320 at any of the Barclays branches indicated on the website for Legalization of the Marriage Certificate.

Kindly note:

• Personal appearance of applicant is required
• All documents must be submitted, in original as well as in a clear photocopy, at the same time of application
• In case of minors, birth certificate and parents / guardian formal consent to the trip and a copy of their passport or identity card

List of documents:

• Application form duly completed and signed by applicant (by parents/guardian in case of minor) and phone number.
• Passport (or other travel document recognized by the Italian Government ) valid for minimum three months after expiry of requested visa and containing at least 2 empty pages (back to back) and a validity not exceeding 10 years
• Four recent full face color photos, passport size (45 mm x 35 mm), taken against a light background.
• Previous passport in original if any
• Kenyan I.D. Card.
  For different nationalities, Kenyan resident permit or re-entry stamp in passport valid minimum 3 months after expiry of the visa
• Authorisation (”NULLA OSTA”) for family reunion issued by the competent Italian Authority (”SPORTELLO UNICO PER L’IMMIGRAZIONE”).
• Parents should proof that the family member resident in Italy is :
• The only son/daughter and the only source of financial support
• Parents aged 65 and over, when the other children present in the country of origin or provenance can’t take care of their needs and the family member resident in Italy is the only source of financial support
• Birth, marriage and any other certificate, duly legalized, proving the real existing relationship with the family member resident in Italy
• Photocopy of Resident Permit and identity card of the Sponsor in Italy

• NB: SOMALI CITIZENS ONLY:

  • Applicable only to parents and children.
    Applicants have to refer to IOM (International Organization for Migration) for DNA test procedure soon after hand over of application at the VFS office.
  • Applicable to all Family reunion Somali applicants.
    Please provide one more copy of your passport (that is 2 photocopies in total) and one extra copy of the Nulla osta ( that is 2 photocopies in total)

Please provide your recent photograph (not more than 6 months old). The photographs should be in colour: -

• Taken against a clear white background so that features are distinguishable and contrast against the background;
• Clear and of good quality(as per the ticked sample but with white background);
• Printed on normal photographic paper;
• Unmounted - 45 mm x 35 mm in size;
• Full face (without sunglasses and normally without a hat or other head covering, unless the applicant wears such items because of their religious belief or ethnic background).

The processing at the Embassy of Italy is at the Embassy’s discretion.
