A visitor's visa allows you to stay in Norway or other countries in the Schengen area for up to 90 days over a period of 180 days.

Before you apply;
- You can apply form 6 months before your departure date, so please allow sufficient time to apply. To find out more, please read processing time page.
- It is not recommended to purchase the flight ticket before visa is issued.
- You require online application registration before you apply.
- Applicant must present in person at visa application center to register biometric information.
- You may be requested for additional document or interview during processing at The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Beijing.
- You must hold Japanese residence permit in order to apply from Tokyo.
- IF you are visiting a Schengen country other than Norway, you must apply form the Embassy/Consulate of the country you are visiting.
- If you are visiting two or more Schengen countries, you should apply to the Schengen country associated with your main purpose of travel. If your main purpose of travel is the same for more than one country, for example a holiday, apply to the country you plan to stay in the longest. If you plan to spend an equal amount of time in each Schengen country, apply to the country you intend to visit first.

Visa Fees

Before you visit Visa application center, you must complete your application form and payment online.
If it is the first time for you to apply, you need to complete registration to obtain user account. To create your user account, please click here.
Once you finished registration, you will be receiving email with cover letter attached. This cover letter will be the evidence for your completion of application form and payment. So please print this cover letter and submit along with other supporting documents at Visa application center.
IMPORTANT: Payment only accepted by credit card via online portal. However, card holders name can be other than applicant, if applicant dese not hold credit card.
Service Fee
In addition to the Visa Fees, applicant requires to pay the VFS Service Charge as mentioned below:
Japan - VFS Service fee is EUR 70 (Non-refundable) to be effective from 1st Jan 2024.
The applicant may request to have the passport returned from the embassy while the application is being processed. If the applicant later resubmits the passport for issuance of visa, VFS may request the applicant to pay (63 EUR) to cover the Resubmission Courier.
Please note that this is only applicable if you have already submitted your passport.

Photo Specifications
All photos must meet the requirements listed below. If these requirements have not been met, the applicant will have to deliver a new photo that meets the requirements. The photo requirements are the same for children as for adults.
The Photo shall:
- be in sharp focus, clear and with good contrasts
- be printed on quality photo paper with high solution
- be in colours with a whitebackground
- be 35-45mm in width
- maximum 3months old, resemble the applicant
- full-face, facing the camera directly, eyes looking straight at the camera
- Show the whole head and the top of the shoulders. The face shall occupy 70-80 % of the picture
- Show open eyes that are clearly visible. Hair shall not cover the eyes
Regarding glasses:
Glasses are allowed as long as the eyes are clearly visible.
- the glasses cannot be coloured
- the rim must not cover any part of the eyes
- there cannot be reflection in the glasses
Regarding head-dress:
Religious head-dresses are allowed provided that all details of the face are clearly shown.
- Chin, forehead and both cheeks shall all be clearly visible
- Shadows in the face due to the head-dress are not allowed

Processing Time
The processing time is up to 45 days from the time your application reached the Embassy in Beijing - not from when you registered online or submitted your documents to VFS
Please note that the processing time is counted from the date the Embassy receives the application, not the date the application is submitted at the Visa Application Centre. Applications will usually be delivered to the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Beijing in two working days, however due to custom or bad weather and other natures, this may take longer. So please submit your application with sufficient time. Applicants are able to apply form 6 month before from departure date.

Residence Permit
Staying in Norway for more than 90 days, or when they work in Norway, it is necessary to apply for a residence permit in advance.

- In general, Residence Permit does not go down when the purpose of the trip is sightseeing or a regular business trip. In such a case, if you are a Japanese national, it would be a good idea to visit Norway using the visa exemption period of 90 days. For other nationals who need a visa for entry to Norway please refer to the page on short-term Schengen visa.
- When applying for a residence permit, please prepare application document according to the checklist. The checklist for each permission can be found on the UDI homepage. If you are unable to submit required documents, you must have explanation documents stating the reason why you cannot submit such documents. Applications may be rejected due to inadequate information or documents.
- All Documents must be submitted in original. If you wish to return the original (family register, translation, contract, certificate etc.), please also prepare a copy of it including your passport with all used pages (such as ID page, visa issuing page, immigration and departure stamp page).
- When applying for residence permit, you require receiving apostille to the documents which were issued by public institution, such as of birth certificate, marriage certificate, family register, etc. To find out more for Apostille, please click.
- When applying for a residence permit, all documents must be in Norwegian or English. Since the application documents will be judged in Norway, other than that will be deemed as invalid documents. There are no particular translation agency authorized by Norway MFA, but they only accept translation done by authorized agents. You can find a list of examples here. VFS is not currently offering any of translation service from Visa application center.

Family Immigration

Family immigration with Norwegian or Nordic citizen
- Applicable if your family is living in Norway, or your family in Norway have qualified residence permit to immigrate family to Norway.
- Applicants over 18 years old whose parent lives in Norway in general, could not qualify for family immigration. Also, applicants who have children over 18 years old in general could not qualify for family immigration.
- Person undertaking applicant to live in Norway must demonstrate sufficient income and financial eligibility in past and future reference. For more information regarding to financial eligibility, please refer to the checklist.
- Before submitting documents you need to register at Application Portal. You can select "family immigration" on portal to find the checklist according to the relationship to your undertaker.
Family immigration for fiancée in Norway.
- This is the fiancée permit to enter Norway. Although Japanese nationals are except for Visa to stay up to 90 days, you can marry within 90days, after you entering Norway and apply for family immigration within Norway. You are also permitted to stay during application processing period. Therefore, it is not recommended to apply from Japan, for saving time and fees if you are the Japanese national or visa exempt national.
- This permit is valid for 6 months, and you will need to get married within this period.
- It is also necessary to prove that you can marry in Norway after meeting the requirements for regular family immigration.
- If you are going to stay in Norway after marriage, you will require applying for family immigration permit. You can apply for this permit while you are in Norway.
- Please register your application on Application portal, before you are submitting documents. Please select ‘ Family immigration’ and use the check list for "family immigration for those who are getting married" to find out your requirement and documents.

Work

Below to explain some of the most common permissions for work
Skilled Workers
- You have specific job placement in Norway, which you are going to be paid from Norway company/organization.
- Work must be the full time shift.
- The work must be qualified as a skilled worker which requires the specific qualifications / skill for that work.
- Your salary and work condition must be reaching sufficient standards in Norway, which Employer’s responsibility.
- Please register your application on Application portal, before you are submitting documents. Please select “Work (Skilled Worker)” and use the check list for "Skilled Worker (with a Norwegian employer)"to find out your requirement and documents.
Skilled Workers Seconded employee
- Applicant is the employee of the foreign company/organization.
- Applicant to have contractual tie up to company/organization in Norway.
- Contract is stating that applicant will be assigned for work for certain period in Norway.
- Salary will need to be paid by foreign Employer.
- In general, the assignee must be limited to one particular Norwegian company.
- Not necessary need to be the full time assignment.
- Your salary and work condition must be reaching sufficient standards in Norway, which Employer’s responsibility.
- Please register your application on Application portal, before you are submitting documents. Please select “Work (Skilled Worker)” and use the check list for "Seconded employee"to find out your requirement and documents.
Working Holiday
- You must have valid residence certificate (Ju-min-hyo) at the point you are applying. Even if you are living in foreign country, you still need to submit Ju-min-hyo.
- You must be age between 18 to 30 years old at the time you are applying. It is OK to turn 31 years old after you have applied.
- The main purpose for this permit is the long stay tourism, so you must not study over 3 months, or work at one place for longer than 6 months.
- You must hold Japanese passport.
- You must have sufficient funds for living up to 3 months after entering to Norway. For more detail, please refer the check list.
- You must intend to leave Norway after stay period has finished. However, you do not need to hold return ticket when you are entering to Norway.
- You must be in good health. which means that there are no indications of illness that would make hospitalisation in Norway likely. Please provide a health certificate for the same.
- You need to have insurance to cover all medical bills while you are staying in Norway.
- The Insurance must be valid for entire period of your stay in Norway. Please submit a insurance policy in original and copy along with a residence permit application form. The original copy will be returned to you after decision was made. Please update the insurance validity if planned period to stay in Norway has changed from the time you have applied.
- Please register your application on Application portal, before you are submitting documents. Please select “Work (Exchange, cultural and organizational work)” and use the check list for "Working holiday for young adults from Japan "to find out your requirement and documents.
Researchers with own funds
- You must have an invitation letter to conduct research at a university, laboratory or similar institution.
- You must be able to maintain your living throughout the period of staying in Norway (must have own funds). Please see the document checklist for details such as the amount of money.
- Housing must be secured. In most cases, universities and research institutions will help you to secure housing.

Study

Below to explain some of the most common cases for Study permit.
Students in higher education and high school students
- You must have been duly admitted to enrollment.
- You must have enough funds for living. Please refer the checklist for sufficient amount.
- Funds need to be certified by the Norwegian institution where you are accepted or the deposit certificate of the Norwegian bank in the name of the principal. Certificates of Japan or other foreign banks are not accepted. In many cases it is impossible for the applicant to open a bank account in Norway. In such case, please contact the Norwegian educational institution where you are accepted, and ask for advice how to send money to the deposit account of the institution (deposit account). So the institution can issue the warranty the funds is held at their deposit account. If your enrollment letter already stating the funds warrantees, you do not need to submit additional evidence.
