Overview
This site provides information on procedures for applying for a Schengen visa to travel to Norway. The Norwegian Embassy in Nairobi is responsible for processing Schengen visa applications from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Eritrea, Djibouti, South Sudan, Somalia and Comoros.
For Prospective Applicants
If you wish to apply for a Schengen visa to Norway, kindly read the information on this site carefully. If you follow the guidelines listed on this site, you will be able to submit your documents accurately. This will reduce the chances of your application being rejected due to inadequate or incorrect submission of documents.
A Schengen visa allows you to visit Norway and/or the other countries in the Schengen area for up to 90 days over a period of 180 days. If you wish to reside in Norway for an extended period of time (more than 90 days), you need to apply for a residence permit. Please be informed that a Schengen visa does not allow you to take up employment, or to establish a business, trade or profession in the Schengen area.
As long as your visa is valid, you can travel around freely in the Schengen area, or in the specific Schengen countries covered by the visa. If you leave the Schengen area, for example to visit the UK or Svalbard, you will need a multiple entry visa.
If you plan to visit several Schengen countries in the course of one trip, you must submit your application to the embassy or consulate of the country that is your main destination, i.e. where you intend to spend the most days. If you intend to visit several Schengen countries, but do not have a main destination (i.e. you intend to spend an equal amount of days in each country), you should apply at the embassy or consulate of the Schengen country which is your first port of entry.
Your application for a Schengen visa will be forwarded to the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Nairobi for further processing. All cases are considered individually to see if the requirements for granting a visa are met. To read more about the conditions that must be fulfilled in order to be granted a Schengen visa, please visit the home page of the Directorate of Immigration in Norway (UDI).A visa issued by a Schengen country permits free movement within the Schengen area, unless otherwise stated on the visa sticker. However, please note that according to article 47 :info: of the Visa Code mere possession of a visa does not confer an automatic right to entry and that the holders of visa are requested to present proof that they fulfil the entry conditions at the external border, as provided for in Article 5 of the Schengen Borders Code.
When you cross the border into the Schengen area, you will have to present:
- your passport with the visa sticker
- proof that you have enough money to support yourself during your stay (e.g. cash or a credit card). If you have a guarantee form, you should also bring a copy of this with you
- documentation showing the purpose of your visit, such as an invitation, hotel reservation, etc.
- a return or round-trip ticket if you are visiting the Schengen area for tourist purposes or private reasons
You may be asked to provide fingerprints by the border control officer, in which case these will be compared with the fingerprints provided when you applied for your visa.
If you have been granted a visa, a sticker will be placed in your passport. You are responsible for ensuring that the information in the issued sticker is correct. When you collect your passport, it is important that you check that the spelling of your name, passport number, duration of stay and number of entries to the Schengen area is correct on the visa sticker. If the sticker contains inaccurate details, inform the Royal Norwegian Embassy immediately in order to have it corrected.
Please go to the home page of the Directorate of Immigration in Norway (UDI) for Information on application procedures and regulations for short term visits to Norway/Schengen area.

Residence permit (stays for more than 90 days)
-
Overview
If you wish to reside in Norway for more than 90 days, you have to apply for a residence permit in order to work, study or live with a family member in Norway.
For Prospective Applicants
Kindly read the information on this site carefully. If you follow the guidelines listed on this site, you will be able to submit your documents accurately. This will reduce the chances of your application being rejected due to inadequate or incorrect submission of documents.
In Kenya applications for residence permits are to be submitted at the VFS Norway Visa Application Center in Nairobi, who will forward the application to the Norwegian Embassy in Nairobi, for further screening. Once the Norwegian Embassy in Nairobi has screened the application, the Embassy will forward the application to the Directorate of Immigration (UDI) in Norway for further processing.
For nationals of other countries:
- Nationals of EU/EEA countries do not need a residence permit to stay or work in Norway. However, all nationals of EU/EEA countries who want to stay for longer than three months must register with the police
- Nationals of non-EU/EEA countries who want to work in Norway or to stay for longer than 90 days need a residence permit.
Find out what type of residence permit you need, e.g., in connection with work, studies, or family immigration. You will find information on the different types of residence permits on UDI’s website, along with information about the documents that you have to submit with your application.
Please note that in family immigration applications, the Embassy may be required to conduct a DNA test or interview of applicants. In these cases, the Embassy will contact the applicants via email and/or the phone number that was registered when the application was lodged online. It is therefore important that the correct contact information is registered.
Kindly be informed that the processing time only starts once the case is registered at the Embassy in Nairobi.
Please note that the Embassy does not have the capacity to provide you with daily updates regarding your application. Once the case is finalized, the travel document along with the decision will be dispatched to VFS Global who will then notify you as soon as these are available for collection.
Please note that the Embassy cannot share information regarding your application with any third party unless you have signed and submitted a Power of Attorney form.
Residence permit applications are processed by the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI). As such, inquiries regarding status updates should be forwarded to UDI: https://www.udi.no/en/contact-us/applicants-with-questions-about-a-case-or-regulations/

National visa (D-visa)
-
Overview
If you wish to move to Norway to live with a family member, the main rule is that a residence permit must have been granted before you can enter Norway. However, if you are granted an entry visa (D-visa), you can apply for a residence permit for the purpose of family immigration from Norway. Likewise, if you have already applied for a residence permit you can, in certain cases, be granted an entry visa so that you can travel to Norway to wait for your application to be decided by the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI).
Kindly be informed that an entry visa can only be granted in certain exceptional cases. It is a condition that there is no doubt about whether the all conditions for family immigration have been met. The Embassy is required to reject applications for an entry visa if the conditions are not met, or if the Embassy is in doubt about whether all the conditions are met. In addition to spouses, also joint children may be granted an entry visa. For more information on the requirements for being granted an entry visa, please see the guidelines from UDI
Entry visas may also be granted for spouses/joint children of skilled workers with residence permits in Norway. Please see UDI Guideline 2013-004.
In order to apply for an entry visa you must register an application for a Schengen visa (under “Visit and holiday”) in UDI’s application portal. The Embassy will change this into an application for an entry visa (D-visa) when they receive the application from the VFS Visa Application Centre.
Please note: An entry visa gives an applicant the right to wait in Norway for the decision in a residence permit case. It is not a residence permit, and the entry visa does not give the applicant right to work or access to any welfare services or health service benefits in Norway, nor does it give you the right of re-entry to Norway if you travel abroad. If you have been granted an entry visa, the Embassy recommends that you purchase a private health insurance that will cover the whole period until your application for a residence permit has been decided.

However, the total residence time in the Schengen area cannot exceed 90 days during the past six months. The visa you are granted from Norway is valid in all the Schengen countries.

7- Day Entry Visa - Spouse
-
Overview
If you wish to obtain a permit for family immigration, you must, as a general rule, have been granted a permit before entering Norway. However, in certain circumstances you may enter Norway before a permit has been granted. In such a case, you must obtain an entry visa if you are subject to the visa requirement.
The embassy might, in exceptional cases, issue a 7-day D entry visa with the purpose to apply for family reunion in Norway. If you belong to one of the following categories below and intend to stay in Norway for more than 90 days, you can apply for such an entry visa. This visa ensures valid stay for a period of 7 days, during which an application for residence permit has to be submitted at the local police office. The applicant is then entitled to stay in Norway while the application for a residence permit is being processed. The following persons may apply for an entry visa:
- The spouse of a Norwegian national who is living in Norway or plans to settle here.
- The spouse of a Nordic national who has lived in Norway for the past three years if the couple has been married for at least three years.
- The spouse of a foreign national who has a permanent settlement permit if the couple has been married for at least three years.
- The spouse of a foreign national who has an individual permit to work in a group if the couple has been married for at least three years.
- Spouse of a foreign national who has a work permit as a skilled worker or as a skilled worker in a multinational company.
- Children that you and your spouse have had together who are not Norwegian nationals (children you have had with previous partners (children of only one party) must apply for family immigration via their country of origin/country of residence).
If you have not applied for and been granted a temporary work permit, you are not entitled to work during the visa period. Nor are you entitled to schooling, Norwegian language tuition and certain other benefits while you are waiting for your application to be processed.
Being granted an entry visa has no bearing on the outcome of your application for family immigration.
A 7-day D-visa will only be granted if the Embassy has been provided with documents proving that the relationship is of a long lasting and serious character. If the Norwegian citizen has previously been married to a foreigner from a country where a visa is needed to travel to Norway, or the Kenyan/Somali citizen has previously been married to a Norwegian citizen, a 7-day D-visa will not be granted.
In order to apply for an entry visa you must register your application as a normal Schengen visa application on our Application Portal. There you will also be asked to pay the fee and apply together with your supporting documents. When the application reaches the Embassy, the Norwegian Embassy will register the application as a 7 day entry visa and your fee will be refunded by the Royal Norwegian Embassy, Nairobi .

If you wish to come to Norway through family immigration you must, as a rule, have been granted a residence permit before entering Norway. However, in certain circumstances you may enter Norway before you have been granted a residence permit. In such cases, you need an entry visa if you are subject to the visa requirement – a visa for applying for or waiting for a decision on an application for family immigration.

Seasonal Work
-
Overview
Seasonal work is work that can only be carried out during limited parts of the year due to climate variations, fluctuations in the availability of raw materials or other circumstances. Forestry, agriculture, the fish processing industry, plant nurseries and the restaurant and tourism industries are typical seasonal industries. Odd jobs such as carpentry, painting and other maintenance and restoration work are not considered seasonal work. If you are to replace an employee in connection with holidays, this must be clearly stated in your application. There is no requirement as to when during the year holidays can be taken. You can be granted a residence permit for seasonal work for up to six months. The six months can be divided between several permits for one and the same or several different employers. If you want to change employers after your permit has been granted, you have to apply again. For more information about permits to work as a seasonal worker, please
