Short Term Visa
Tourism Visa or Personal Visit
-
Overview
- Visa requirements depend on the nationality/citizenship of the applicant; not on their immigration status (e.g. green card holder).
- American and Mexican citizens do not need a visa to visit Slovenia for up to 92 days in the period of 180 days. Please note that the calculations of stay are "sliding scale calculations" (the duration of stay is calculated 180 days prior to the date of entry into the Schengen area – Schengen calculator; the stay in any country of the Schengen area is included in the calculation).
- A list of third countries whose nationals must hold a short-stay visa is available on the following link: Click Here
- VISA APPLICATIONS ARE TO BE SUBMITTED IN PERSON.
RULES OF JURISDICTION – WHERE TO APPLY?
You can enter and leave the Schengen zone through any country; HOWEVER you have to apply for your visa at the correct embassy or consulate and not simply at an Embassy or Consulate of your convenience.
- If you are planning to visit ONLY ONE COUNTRY you need to apply at that Member State's Embassy or Consulate.
- If your visit includes more than one country, you need to apply at the Member State that is the MAIN DESTINATION of your visit: in terms of the length or purpose of stay.
-
If no main destination can be determined (because you are travelling to several countries for the same periods of time or for various purposes), the MEMBER STATE WHOSE EXTERNAL BORDER YOU INTEND TO CROSS FIRST for entering the Schengen zone (e.g. the first airport) is responsible for your visa application.
If it is determined, you are not applying at the correct Embassy or Consulate the application WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. If you manage to get the visa issued nonetheless, there is a serious risk that you will be refused entry at the border.

Holders of B1 / B2 visas please apply in your home country.

Passport Requirements
In order to apply for a visa:
- The passport must be valid at least 3 months longer than the intended stay.
- Passport issued more than 10 years ago cannot be considered for the application (regardless if the passport is still valid/was prolonged).
- At least two pages must be empty in the visa section of the passport.
TRAVEL MEDICAL INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must present travel medical insurance with a minimum coverage of 30.000 EUR, valid throughout the territory of Schengen member states. Insurance must cover: emergency medical expenses, hospital treatment, repatriation for medical reasons, or repatriation of remains.
Applicants for a visa for one or two entries shall prove that they are in possession of travel medical insurance covering the whole period of their stay in Schengen area.
Applicants for a visa for multiple entries shall prove that they are in possession of travel medical insurance covering the period of their first intended visit. The insurance must only cover the period of effective stay, not the validity of the visa. However, in cases of multiple entry visas, the insurance must be bought for each trip to the Schengen area – failure to provide proof of insurance at the border is grounds for denial of entry into the Schengen area countries.
We suggest the insurance coverage is a couple of days longer than the intended stay, for cases of delayed flights or similar.
Make sure that your insurance coverage letter proves that you meet ALL requirements above. Photocopy of your insurance card is not sufficient evidence of adequate medical insurance.
Full policies will not be studied.
If you don’t succeed to get the required coverage letter from your insurance company, you must purchase an international medical insurance for the trip.
PLEASE NOTE: the insurance coverage letter is a compulsory document*. If the Medical insurance document is missing, the visa will be denied.
*This does not apply to holders of diplomatic passports.

A Member State may require the central authorities of other Member States to consult its central authorities during the examination of visa applications lodged by nationals of specific third countries or specific categories of nationals. The holder of visa can be requested to present proof that he/she fulfils the entry conditions at the external border (such as medical insurance). If the circumstances under which a visa was issued have changed, border authorities may refuse entry and revoke the visa. A visa may also be revoked if it is subsequently established that the data submitted during the visa issuing procedure was incorrect or that important facts were concealed.
http://www.washington.veleposlanistvo.si/index.php?id=429&L=1In case of a negative decision the applicants receive a notification of refusal/annulment/revocation of the visa. Applicants have the right to appeal the decision within 8 days from the receipt of the notification. The appeal must be filed in written form in Slovene language. The appeal must be filed at the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Washington, DC or Consulate General in Cleveland, OH (depending where visa application was lodged) and is decided upon by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia.
