Overview

Applicants residing in the 9 Northern Provinces
Applicants residing in Chiang Mai, Phayao, Mae Hong Son, Lampang, Lamphun, Phrae, Chiang Rai, Nan or Uttaradit may apply at the Consulate-General of Japan in Chiang Mai only.

Application by proxy
In principle, you should apply in person. However, if you meet one of the following criteria, you can ask an agent, family member, or messenger to apply on your behalf. In this regard, Authorization Letter is required.
- Those who are under 16 and above 60 years of age
- Those who are physically disabled
- Those who are traveling for business purposes
- Those who have obtained a visa and traveled to Japan within the last 5 years (Must present previous Visa attached in your passport at the time of submission)
- Those who are traveling as a part of group tour which is organized by travel agency
- Those who hold a diplomatic or official passport

Denial of visa
If visa is not granted, we usually cannot disclose the reasons to the applicant or persons concerned. JVAC will not accept another application from the same applicant within 6 months of the date of refusal.

Do not book air tickets before you obtain visa
We strongly recommend you NOT to purchase your air ticket before obtaining a visa to Japan. We are NOT responsible for the air fare and other costs incurred in case of denial of visa.

Official Passport & Diplomatic Passport
The Embassy of Japan will continue to accept applications from Diplomatic and Official passport holders and applicants traveling on humanitarian emergency to Japan or visa transfer of issued visa to new passport.

Visa Fees
You must pay the applicable Visa fee and Service charge when submitting your application. The Visa fees are determined based on your Nationality and Type of Entry to Japan. Please refer to the table below to know your visa fees:
Effective as of 1 April 2026, VISA Fees will be revised as follows;
Nationality Single Entry Multiple Visa Transit Visa Thailand and others 670 1340 160 India 190 190 20 Processing fee of 705 THB (including VAT) paid to JVAC will be collected upon application.
Both-way courier fee of 570 THB (including VAT) applies per application if made at any Intake Center.
Exceptions for visa fees only:
- Certain nationals are exempted from visa fee payment, kindly contact usto know the countries exempted from the visa fee payment
Please Note:
- Visa Fee is refunded only if the visa is not approved by the Embassy.
- Service charge will be levied on applicants exempted from paying visa fees.
- • Applicants submitting their application at JVAC in Bangkok may opt to receive their passport by courier to an office / residence address.
- All charges (Visa Fee, Service charges and other optional charges) are to be paid in Thai Baht.

Nationals of Former Soviet Union
If you are a national of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan or Georgia, please submit 2 sets of application forms and photos1. Photo Specifications
Please submit one photograph along with your visa application. The photograph must be:
- Not more than 6 months old
- 2 x 1.4 inch
- Either black-and-white or colored, with plain background
- Taken looking straight forward and face seen clearly

Processing Time
Under normal circumstances, the visa application process takes at least 5 working days,7 to 8 working days if submitted at Intake Centers. This may vary for certain applications and it is at the sole discretion of the Embassy of Japan, Thailand.
