Visa Types
You can apply for a short-term visa for stays in the Schengen Area of no more than three months (90 days) in a period of six months (180 days) from the date of entry into the Schengen Area.
Short Term Visas
Schengen visa
Citizens of some non-EU countries are required to hold a valid Schengen visa when travelling to the Schengen area, which is a group of European countries that allows a person, who’s been admitted to the Schengen Area, to travel without any further form of border control within the Schengen Area.
Current Schengen States are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
A Schengen visa is a short stay visa, i.e. for stays up to 90 days, allowing its holder to circulate in the Schengen Area.
As a general rule, a visa should be applied for prior to the intended journey at the consulate of the competent Member State in the applicant's country of residence.
If the travel destination is one Member State, that Member State's consulate must deal with the application. A single trip is considered when an applicant enters the Schengen Area, stays there for a certain period and eventually leaves the Schengen Area.
If the travel destination includes more than one Member State, or if several separate visits are to be carried out within a period of two months, the application must be dealt with by the consulate of the main destination. The main destination is understood to be the destination where the applicant intends to spend the longest time or where the main purpose of the intended journey is carried out.
If no main destination can be determined, the consulate of the Member State whose external border the applicant intends to cross first must deal with the application.
Generally an application for a multiple-entry visa should be dealt with by the Member State that constitutes the usual main destination; i.e. the Member State of the most frequent destination or in the case of absence of such a destination, the Member State of the first envisaged trip.
Controls at the border
Your short-stay visa allows you to travel to Lithuania and usually to other Schengen States. But it does not automatically entitle you to enter the Schengen area. You may have to provide certain information at the border or other controls.
You may, for instance, have to provide information on your means of support, how long you intend to stay in Lithuania, and why you are visiting Lithuania. In some cases, such checks may result in a refusal for the visa holder to enter Lithuania or the Schengen area. It is therefore recommended that you carry with you copies of the documents, which you presented when you applied for the visa (e.g. letters of invitation, travel confirmations, other documents stating the purpose of your stay). This will help to make the border control procedure easier and avoid delays at the border.
The documentation related to the means of travel and accommodation must cover the complete itinerary of the single trip to the Schengen Area; i.e. travel tickets must be provided, not only for the travel from and to the Schengen Area, but also for the travel between the different Schengen States, when more than 1 Schengen State will be visited during the single trip.
Each Schengen visa application must fully comply with the documents required for the respective visa category and can only be submitted up to 6 months before the intended departure date.
The acceptance of a Schengen visa application and supporting documents by VFS does not guarantee the issuance of a Schengen visa.
The issuance of a Schengen visa, the Schengen visa validity period, the number of entries and amount of travel days are at the sole discretion of the Mission.
If a visa application is returned by the Mission requesting missing documents or any other missing/ incorrect information, the applicant must accept responsibility for any delay that may occur in the visa application processing time.
Prior consultations:
On the grounds of a threat to public policy, internal security, international relations or public health, a Schengen Member State may require the central authorities of other Schengen Member States to consult its central authorities during the examination of applications lodged by nationals of specific third countries or specific categories of such nationals.
