Visa Information
VISA TYPES
Select the visa type that is right for you to see important information on visa fees, documents required, forms, photo specifications and processing times.
Short Term
If you wish to visit Norway for a short period of time, you must obtain a visa prior to entry if you come from a country with a visa requirement for entering Norway. Mongolian nationals require a visa to Norway.
It is advisable to lodge the application well in advance and no later than 45 days before the intended visit. Please note that applications can be lodged no more than six months before the start of the intended visit (nine months for seafarers).
If you plan to visit more than one Schengen country in the course of one trip, or if you plan several separate trips within a period of two months, you must submit your application to the embassy or consulate of the Member State that is your main destination based on the length of your stay, or the purpose of stay.
If no main destination can be determined, the Member State whose external border the applicant intends to cross first in order to enter the territory of the Member States.
A visa is only intended to allow a foreign national to visit Norway and/or the other Schengen countries for a limited period of time (maximum of 90 days). If you wish to reside in Norway for an extended period of time (more than 90 days), you need to apply for a long term visa (Student and Work Permit and Family reunification).
The possession of a visa does not confer an automatic right of entry to a Schengen country. The visa holder is requested to present proof that they fulfill the entry conditions at the border (valid travel document, valid visa, and valid purpose of travel with adequate means of travel).
Schengen countries: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
Duration of stay, visa validity and insurance
Duration of stay
Your stay in the Schengen area cannot exceed the number of days in the “duration of stay” field in the visa sticker.
Period of validity
From 14 May 2012 we will add 15 days to the validity of the visa to allow you some flexibility regarding when to enter and exit the Schengen area. This means that the period of time between “from...until...” in the visa sticker will be 15 days longer than the number of days printed in the “duration of stay” field.
Travel medical insurance
When applying for a visa, your Travel medical insurance must cover the days of your intended stay in the Schengen area. Important: If you after issuance of the visa decide to delay your entry to the Schengen area, you are yourself responsible to buy/hold a valid insurance that covers the actual stay in the Schengen area. Failure to hold an insurance that covers the actual stay may lead to problems at the airport or entering the Schengen area.
The travel medical insurance must meet the following criteria:
- It is valid throughout Schengen territory.
- It is valid during the entire period that you will be in Schengen territory. You can read more about validity of the insurance here.
- The coverage is at least EURO 30.000.
- The coverage includes repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical care and/or emergency treatment in a hospital and assistance in case of death..
We will only accept machine-written insurance policies.
Business Visa
-
Overview
Individuals travelling to Norway with the purpose of doing business can apply for Schengen Visa. Please note that applicants applying for a business visa are required to provide documents according to this category.
If you would like to visit one Schengen country, apply for your Schengen visa at the Embassy of that country. If you would like to visit several Schengen countries, apply for your visa at the Embassy of the country of your main destination (i.e. where you intend to spend the most days).
If you intend to visit several Schengen countries, but do not have a main destination (i.e. you intend to spend an equal amount of days in each country), you should apply at the Embassy or Consulate of the Schengen country which is your first port of entry.
It is advisable to lodge the application well in advance and no later than 45 days before the intended visit. Please note that applications can be lodged no more than six months before the start of the intended visit (nine months for seafarers).
Application requirements
- You must hand in all the documents on the mission’s checklist.
- You must have a passport that is valid for at least three months after the end of your visit. The passport must have been issued within the last ten years.
- You must have valid travel insurance.
- You must have enough money to finance your stay in Norway and your return journey. You must normally have NOK 500 for each day of your stay in Norway. Alternatively, someone you know, who is living in Norway, can give a financial guarantee.
- You must not be subject to a prohibition against entry to Norway or Schengen.
- If you have been in the Schengen area in the last 90 days, you must check when it is possible for you to re-enter, and how many days you can stay in Schengen.
- If you are under the age of 18, both your parents, or your legal guardians, must sign your application.
- The mission must consider it probable that you will leave the Schengen area when the visit is over. In assessing this, the mission will consider the situation in your country and your own personal situation. In particular, it will focus on whether you have anything that ties you to your home country, for example work, property, a spouse or family.
If you are granted a visa
The possession of a visa does not give you an automatic right of entry to a Schengen country.
When you cross the border into the Schengen area, you will have to present:
- your passport with the visa sticker
- proof that you have enough money to support yourself during your stay (e.g. cash or a credit card). If you have a guarantee form, you should also bring a copy of this with you.

Multiple Entry Visas
-
Overview
A Schengen visa is generally issued for a single entry. If the applicant plans to travel outside the Schengen area and return within the period of the visa, the box for “Two entries” or “Multiple entries” must be ticked off in the visa application form. The Embassy will then assess if there is a genuine need for a multiple entry visa.
The application must be accompanied by an explanation of why two or more entries are required.
Important reminders
The processing time is up to 45 days from the time your application reached the Embassy in Beijing - not from when you registered online or submitted your documents to VFS.
Do not pay for any bookings before a visa has been issued.
By applying early, you will have more time to book the trip after you have received the visa.
As long as your passport isn't returned to VFS, the decision has not been made. The Embassy does not give further details about the status of an application.
